Quarter vellum, orange gilt-decorated cloth. Fine. The Last Spanish Voyage to the Pacific Northwest. The narrative chronicles the Spanish voyage of discovery up the Strait of Juan de Fuca and into the Strait of Georgia. While searching for the fabled Northwest Passage, Galiano (commander of the Sutil) met up with Captain George Vancouver's expedition, and was invited to join forces with the British. The Spanish ships were unable to keep up, and eventually anchored off the east coast of Galiano Island; they later landed and met up with some Natives of the country. They continued northwards looking for safe anchorage, and landed near the present site of Nanaimo, where they exchanged some articles with the Natives. The Sutil and Mexicana eventually sailed around Vancouver Island, and returned to Nootka. This voyage marked the end of the great Spanish voyages and the attempt to establish a permanent fur-trading outpost at Nootka, which would have challenged both the Russians and the British. $200.…
