FIRST EDITION, tissue-guarded frontispiece photographic portrait of Lytton, further plate with photograph of the same as Jane Warton, pp. xi, 337, [1], 16 [Publisher's list], crown 8vo, original purple cloth, backstrip sunned with lettering dulled, the W.S.P.U. motif to upper board stamped in green and white, a little rubbed at…extremities, with a few marks to lower board, and a faint waterstain to leading edge of both, textblock edges toned with one or two spots, endpapers a little spotted, good. An important work by the suffragette, Lady Constance Georgina Bulwer-Lytton, who assumed an alternate identity as a working-class spinster named Jane Warton in order to highlight the treatment of low-income women at the hands of the authorities. She documents her arrest and incarceration, highlighting the appalling treatment of suffragettes, and the brutality of force-feeding, which was meted out in response to an organised hunger-strike. [With:] A 3pp. carbon typescript draft of the final passages in the book, with many variants to the text. [And:] A typed copy of her 2pp. letter to Herbert Gladstone, Home Secretary, referred to on p. 300 of the text - assuring him that her wearing of a disguise could hardly be in the line of a practical joke, given its consequences. [And:] A typed copy (with a small ms. correction) of the 'Report on Physical Condition of Lady Constance Lytton' made by Dr Marion Hunter at the beginning of February 1910, cited in full in the text, pp. 301-2. [And:] A contemporary postcard portrait of the author.
