Geburtstages erscheint dieser Band. Orientiert an einigen wichtigen Lebensabschnitten Lowenthals sind hier zum Teil unveroffentlichte Texte aus dem Lowenthal-Archiv der Stadt- und Universitatsbibliothek Frankfurt am Main versammelt. Sie dokumentieren den intellektuellen Werdegang und die Arbeitsschwerpunkte des Wissenschaftlers. Neben einigen Texten aus der Jugendzeit (wie ,Bekenntnis zur Revolution") und Briefen u. a. von Adorno und Kracauer an Lowenthal erscheint hier erstmals eine langere Abhandlung uber den judischen Religionsphilosophen Maimonides, die in den 20er Jahren entstand, als Lowenthal an verschiedenen judischen Institutionen Vorlesungen uber das Thema ,Judentum und deutscher Geist" hielt. Die Analysen und Diskussionen zum Antisemitismus stellen den Schwerpunkt der Arbeiten des Instituts fur Sozialforschung wahrend des New Yorker Exils da. Aus dieser Zeit gelangen hier ein ausfuhrlicher Brief an Herbert Marcuse uber die sogenannte ,Sundenbocktheorie" und zwei weitere Abhandlungen Lowenthals zum Abdruck. Daruber hinaus enthalt der Band zwei bislang unveroffentlichte Reden aus den Jahren 1952 und 1985.
