Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This compelling narrative transports readers to the heart of a pivotal debate that shaped the post-World War II landscape: whether the United States should embrace compulsory military training. The book analyzes the arguments advanced by proponents and opponents of conscription, offering a comprehensive overview of the complex interplay between security, militarism, and American identity. The author explores the historical context of previous conscription proposals, delving into the lessons learned from World War I and the impact of the newly emerged atomic age on national defense strategies. The book sheds light on the ideological divide between those who viewed conscription as a necessary bulwark against future conflicts and those who feared its potential to erode civil liberties and foster a culture of militarism. Through a detailed examination of the arguments presented during Congressional hearings, the author provides a nuanced understanding of the competing visions for America's role in the postwar world. Ultimately, this book serves as a thought-provoking exploration of the enduring tension between the imperative for national security and the preservation of individual freedoms. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Preissová mostly wrote stories full of optimism and the joy of life idealising village life. Her stories first appeared in the early 1890s. The more significant appeared in a three-volume collection. Her books, written in the 1920s, were about the tragic rural life of the Kaerntner (Austria) Slavs, usually with a strong woman as a heroine. These dramas didn't achieve the artistic spontaneity of her early work. Themes of her stories were mostly the affairs of young lovers and the obstacles to their consummation. Some tales were set to music, such as Eva by Josef Bohuslav Foerster and Jenufa, an opera by Janácek. Member of the P.B.F.A. CZECHOSLOVAKIA.
