Aggiungi al carrelloCollection of over 170 architectural designs of Shinto Shrine and Buddhist temple interest covering a long period of time. Ink, pencil, and charcoal on various grades of washi, one in colour, in the form of many scrolls and over 100 either folded or single sheets. Sizes vary from a single sheet to long scrolls (the longest measures 28 x 335cm) and one of the largest folded designs measuring 75 x 45cm. The condition varies as this clearly used as working archive which was handed down over generations, there is some staining, creasing and a little insect damage or chips but the overall condition is very good. A valuable collection of traditional Shinto and Buddhist architectual adornment, decoration and ornamental designs. A unique archive of wood carving designs for Buddhist temples, Buddhist statues and Shinto shrines most likely handed down over generations amongst a wood-carving family. It is not possible to identify where the carvers were located, but it is most likely in the Tohoku (north-east) area of Japan. The area has been known for its strong Buddhist faith and elaborate and delicate wood carving decorations in many temples. Many sheets feature life-size decorative motifs of leaves and flowers which traditionally embellish temple buildings. These motifs were drawn free-hand in dynamic and confident lines. Some patterns of carved wooden decorations which stand in the background of religious statues (Kohai, ??) are included in the archive. Other designs which are included here are of ranma (??, wooden fretwork transom windows) and Buddhist memorial tablets (ihai, ??). These items feature similar motifs to temple carvings. There are some architectural plans and layouts as well as a few sheets featuring sketches of the Buddha together with individual hand and foot details, also cabinet designs. This archive reveals that skilled artists, architects and artisans, such as wood carvers, were widely spread throughout Japan and played significant roles in maintaining cultural traditions in religious architecture and ornament.
