Quarter leather binding by Graham Bloodworth of Leicester, with gilt titles and decoration to the spine, five raised bands, gilt lined leather and marbled paper covered boards, text block is tight with 7 folding plates and 7 full page plates. Pagination: [iv], xx, 340pp. Provenance: bookplate with 'Faithful' and 'and Secret' in a scroll beneath a shield. Approximately 7 inches (18cm) tall. Condition Report Externally Spine - very good condition - gilt titles and decoration, five raised band, gently marked and worn. Joints - very good condition - gently rubbed. Corners - good condition - rubbed and worn. Boards - good condition - gilt lined leather and marbled paper covered board, gently worn. Page edges - good condition - top edges darkened others tanned. Engraved frontispiece, engraved title leaf, engraved dedication leaf, iv + (8 of appendix) + ii + 1-112 + vi inserted into continuous pagination + 113-292 + 6 inserted into continuous pagination + 293-306, with 8 plates (including frontispiece), 4 of them folding + folding table of distances from Tunbridge Wells. The two insertions into the pagination are Monumental Inscriptions at Groombridge and Speldhurst, and A List of the Principal Paintings at Mereworth House. There are various errors in the pagination - the numbering 55 & 56 appears twice as does the numbering for pages 48 - 58, and page 302 appears as 230. Rebound in quarter calf with marbled boards and title lable of red morocco with gilt lettering, with new endpapers. There are no blanks after the final page numbered 306, so it is possible that it may be lacking, but all appears to be present according to the list of contents. The paper is clean and bright throughout. Early ownership name on title page, from Llanfoist. A very pleasing volume.

Some considerable tears to several plates, repaired with archival tape. Likely trimmed for re-binding. Occasional light browning and spotting. Good overall, in an attractive recent binding. Jasper Sprange published the first Tunbridge Wells Guide in 1780. The 1808 edition (not to be confused with the 1808 re-issue of the 1797 edition) was the first genuinely new edition since that of 1797, which had been massively over-printed, and was therefore re-issued several times over the following years.
