Softcover. Condizione: As new. In shrinkwrap. Quarto. Softcover. Illustrated wraps. 222 pages : illustrations (chiefly color), facsimiles, plans, portraits ; 28 cm. French language. Painter-in-Ordinary to the King, Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) was the inspired champion of royal hunting. No artist of the reign of Louis XV knew better than him how to evoke the world of hunting, depicting the forests of Compiègne or Fontainebleau, and translating into painting the coats of dogs, the antlers of deer, and the plumage of game. His artfrom drawings on blue paper to large-format canvasesexerted a notable influence in a wide variety of fields, particularly the decorative arts. This richly illustrated catalog explores the genesis of Oudry's masterpiece, the cartoons of the Royal Hunts, intended to be translated into tapestries by the Gobelins factory. These monumental works detail the stages of a free-run, a ritualized exercise skillfully orchestrated by a majestic apparatus. They glorify the sovereign, portrayed with his crew in the exercise of his devouring passion, and fix, for posterity, the image of a reign to which the disturbing encounter between the ferocity of nature and the refinement of society confers the charm of a mysterious spell.

A single plate extracted from the original volume from the celebrated illustrated edition of Fables choisies, mises en vers, edited by C. P. de Monthenault d'Egly and issued in Paris between 1755 and 1759. Engraved after original designs by Jean-Baptiste Oudry, whose animal subjects set the visual standard for La Fontaine's fables throughout the eighteenth century. Image measures approx. 28.3 × 21 cm (11 × 8¼ inches); sheet 35.5 × 27.5 cm (14 × 10¾ inches). A single plate extracted from the original volume.Light, even age-toning. Originally composed for adult readers, the Fables later became central to French literary education. Oudry's illustrations, engraved by leading eighteenth-century printmakers including Laurent Cars, Cochin, Tardieu, and others, are widely regarded as the definitive visual interpretation of La Fontaine's work. Prima edizione
In January 1716, while in seclusion for the birth then tragic death of her second natural child, the very rich twenty-year-old widow, Marie-Louise-Élisabeth d'Orléans, Duchess of Berry (1696-1719), received from the talented and fashionable painter J.-B. Oudry this ingenious suite of picture riddles on love, seduction and morality. He created, designed and cut the forty playful prints based on prose and verse solutions of his own invention to amuse and distract the young duchess and her friends at so difficult a time. Then much in vogue at the French court, rebuses combine elements of emblems, heraldry, cryptography and mnemonics. The present set incorporates individual letters, syllables and even entire words into the image series in a nod to logogriphs. A few rhymes are topical (the Persian ambassador's visit), literary or just silly (cats eating beef spleen, nonsense rhymes). Though Oudry offered this oblong album for sale at his house, most copies were distributed by the duchess as "in-jokes of a particular social group" (Barber). I offer a provisional census 1) BnF Dépt. des estampes Db 23 (1) (leaves cut out and mounted in a later album with other Oudry prints; 40 plates); 2) BnF Dépt. des estampes KH MAT-5 (leaves cut out and mounted in a later album with other games; state not known); 3) BnF 8-H-28477 (later calf-backed drab boards, lacking plates 2-3 and the final leaf of solutions; not colored; La Vallière-Paulmy ex.); 4) Destailleur-Rothschild (Waddesdon Manor; lacking the four solution leaves; colored); 5) Morgand (without the dedication and solution leaves possibly the present example; colored); 6) that offered here.
