No artist of the reign of Louis XV knew… better than him how to evoke the world of hunting, depicting the forests of Compiègne or Fontainebleau, and translating into painting the coats of dogs, the antlers of deer, and the plumage of game. His artfrom drawings on blue paper to large-format canvasesexerted a notable influence in a wide variety of fields, particularly the decorative arts. This richly illustrated catalog explores the genesis of Oudry's masterpiece, the cartoons of the Royal Hunts, intended to be translated into tapestries by the Gobelins factory. These monumental works detail the stages of a free-run, a ritualized exercise skillfully orchestrated by a majestic apparatus. They glorify the sovereign, portrayed with his crew in the exercise of his devouring passion, and fix, for posterity, the image of a reign to which the disturbing encounter between the ferocity of nature and the refinement of society confers the charm of a mysterious spell.

One of these is 'The Comical Romance', or 'Roman comique', which was originally published between 1651-1657. 'The Comical Romance' follows the history of a troupe and is said to be in the style of the Spanish picaresque romance. It also contains four interpolated tales which were taken from mainly Spanish sources.Other contents include 'Avarice Chastised; or, The Miser Punished', 'The Useless Precaution', 'The Hypocrites', and 'The Innocent Adultery'.Vol I contains fourteen illustrated plates while Vol II contains a single frontispiece.Paul Scarron (c.1610-1660) was a French poet, dramatist, and novelis. He was the first husband of Francoise d'Aubigne, who secretly married King Louis XIV as Madame de Maintenon.Translated by Tom Brown (1662-1704), a translator and satirist, and John Savage.With an introduction by J. J. Jusserand (1855-1932), a French author and diplomat who was the French Ambassador to the United States from 1903 to 1925.Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Cette dition devait constituer un magnifique hommage La Fontaine. Les Fables de La Fontaine que livrent les ditions Diane de Selliers se pr sentent en deux grands volumes : - 640 pages reli es pleine toile sous coffret, - 275 illustrations en couleurs repr sentent la totalit de cette oeuvre de Jean-Baptiste Oudry en format d'origine et dans le respect scrupuleux des coloris de l' poque, - 200 motifs floraux dessin s par Bachelier, en couleurs, viennent ornementer chaque fable, - la typographie a t travaill e dans un esprit fid le celui du XVIIIe si cle.
