The text block is thread bound with pages printed to one side and folded in the traditional style at shukuo (fore-edge). (5)pp prelims one of which is ink stamped No. 122 of 500 copies; pp. a-e publisher's Preface; IVpp author's Avant Propos; 215pp text + (16)pp chapter titles; (2)pp Contents table and colophon; (2)pp unindexed calligraphic plates one of which is mounted; (13)pp unindexed b/w illustrations. Ex-library with very attractive illustrated bookplate and ms shelf mark inside front wrap, and no other marks. Wraps fair, tanned at the edges, torn with some loss and partial indication of label removal along the spine, internal tape repairs, and loss along the top of the plain lower wrap. Interiors good or better with minor loss to the corners of the first couple of leaves (not affecting text), creasing to the first and last few corners, with some spotting. This 2nd edition was issued in the same year as the first, with a 3rd following in 1926. Jean Bouchot (1886-1932) was at this time a member of the French Legation in China. Albert Nachbaur (1879-1933) was a bookseller, publisher, journalist, and Director of the Journal de Pekin. This describes life in Peking's busy hutongs and the manners and customs of its residents in the early years of the Republic.…
