Couverture légèrement frottée, sinon un bon exemplaire très propre. - Du AVERTISSEMENT DES ÉDITEURS à la première édition: Cavaillès, dès lachèvemenl de ses thèses de philosophie, en 1938, sest préparé à une nouvelle étape du tra…vail dexpression de sa propre pensée. Mais, un an après, la guerre lui proposait dautres exercices. On sait comment, après une courageuse campagne dans lhiver 1939-1940, fait prisonnier en mai, Cavaillès sévada en Belgique, durant son transfert en Allemagne, el reprit en octobre 1940 ses cours à lUniversité de Strasbourg repliée à Clermont-Ferrand. On sait aussi quil ne se contenta pas de reprendre sa tâche de professeur, quil ne sestima pas démobilisé par larmistice et quil fut en France un des quatre ou cinq fondateurs des premiers mouvements de Bésistance. La tâche de Cavaillès, en ce domaine, jusquà sa deuxième el définitive arrestation en août 1943, fut écrasante. Du texte: Recourir à la psychologie est-il dit dans le Cours de logique [de Kant] serait « aussi absurde que tirer la morale de la vie. Il ne sagit pas des règles contingentes (Comment nous pensons) mais des règles nécessaires qui doivent être tirées de lusage nécessaire de lentendement que sans aucune psy-hologie on trouve en soi » (1). Cependant le début du Cours rappelle fâcheusement celui dArnauld. Tout dans la nature se produit conformément à des règles aussi lexercice de nos facultés : tel l'entendement. Lentendement est la source des règles en général pour penser. La question est ici daprès quelles règles lui-même procède. Nous ne pouvons pas penser et utiliser notre entendement autrement que conformément à certaines règles » (2). Autrement dit, la science est le produit de certaines facultés, lentendement et la raison ; la Logique ne peut être définie que postérieurement à la position de ces facultés, bien quelle prétende les diriger.
