The author believes that the historian's insights, first written down more than two thousand years ago, are still relevant today and can teach modern military minds a thing or two. In this book, the author presents a detailed analysis of military history, focusing on the tactics and strategies of the ancient Greeks and Romans, with particular attention to the Macedonian phalanx. The author argues that these ancient methods, often dismissed as antiquated, in fact contain a wealth of knowledge still applicable to modern warfare. The book provides a window into military history, exploring significant developments and ideas that have shaped warfare. It aims to revive ancient knowledge and principles to the benefit of contemporary military strategy. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Almirante, 633. Cfr. The text is in French. Part of the text is in a two-column format. FIRST EDITION of the abridgement of the FAMOUS COMMENTARIES of the Chevalier de Folard, established by the Count of Chabot, on the history of the Roman conquest of the Mediterranean as recounted by Polybius (208-126 BC). This IMPORTANT WORK ON MILITARY TACTICS is lavishly illustrated with beautiful intaglio plates, many of which are fold-outs, depicting views, scenes and plans of battles, war machines, and maps. Jean-Charles de Folard (1669-1752), known as the Chevalier de Folard and nicknamed "the French Vegetius", French strategist, engineer and warrior, participated in the wars of the end of the reign of Louis XIV and gave generals he served sometimes plans for the defense of places and/or plans of campaign. These commentaries on the history of Polybius gave him the opportunity to develop his theories of military tactics. Abridged version of Folard's "Commentaries on the History of Polybe" on the arts of war and defense, three volumes finely illustrated with engraved plates including maps, the others representing battle orders and antique weaponry, defences and military artefacts. With a general index of three volumes. This abridged version contains the famous "Traité de la colonne" , and the "Traité de l'attaque et de la défense des places des Anciens". Barbier I/39e; Quérard II/110, III/148 et VII/254. Jean Charles de Folard, 1669 - 1752, soldier and military author, inventor of the column formation." The Chevalier de Folard (13 February 1669 23 March 1752) was a professional soldier from Avignon which at the time was part of the Papal State. A military theorist, he championed the use of infantry columns, rather than the prevailing preference for linear formations. Although his ideas were generally dismissed by contemporaries and he died in obscurity, they remained influential in the long-running debate on tactics that followed. Folard joined the French Royal Army at the age of 16, an action allegedly inspired by reading Caesar's "Commentaries". In 1687 he was allowed to join the Régiment de Béarn as an Officer cadet. The War of the Spanish Succession began in July 1701, and in early 1702 Folard's regiment was sent to secure Naples, where he spent most of the next three years. He used the time to produce a series of tactical ideas and suggestions that brought him to the attention of the duc de Vendôme, commander of the French forces in Italy. In October 1703, Savoy joined the anti-French Grand Alliance. The campaign largely consisted of siege and positional warfare, which allowed Folard to display his engineering skills, and by the end of 1704 he was acting as technical advisor to the Grand Prior. Wounded at Cassano in August 1705, he was awarded the Cross of St. Louis in recognition of his service. While recuperating, Folard began developing the ideas on columns that formed the basis of his intellectual effort from then on. He recovered in time for the 1706 campaign, and was appointed deputy to the commander of the French garrison in Modena. Defeat at Ramillies in July forced Louis XIV of France to withdraw many of his forces from Italy, while the breaking of the Siege of Turin left Modena isolated and it surrendered in February 1707 after a siege of four months. In March 1707, the Convention of Milan provided the remaining French troops in Italy free passage to France, rather than being held as prisoners of war. In 1711, he was made military Governor of Bourbourg, but lost this position following the 1713 Peace of Utrecht. Sponsored by Georg Heinrich von Görtz, in 1716 he entered the service of Charles XII of Sweden, then engaged in the latter stages of the Great Northern War, and whom Folard considered the most talented general of his time. While in Stockholm, he set out his tactical ideas in the form of a commentary on the works of the Greek historian Polybius; he left Sweden on the grounds of ill-health in November 1717 and was shipwrecked on the voyage home, losing all his papers and baggage. During the War of the Quadruple Alliance, Folard served under the Duke of Berwick at the Siege of San Sebastián in 1719 and was finally promoted to colonel. With Europe finally at peace, this was the end of his active military career. Folard spent the next decade preparing his commentaries on Polybius, which were published in 1724 and 1729 respectively. By analysing the battles described by Polybius and adding his own insights, he sought to identify a consistent set of military principles, which included both tactics and leadership. Although some were supported by an influential minority, his contemporaries were largely unconvinced and Folard spent much of his time refuting their criticisms. After Folard's death in 1753, Frederick the Great produced a handbook or "Extract" based on his work; this excluded his ideas on columns and primarily contains Folard's account of Cassano and his claim that it proved the offensive power of the bayonet; it was this aspect that made it attractive to Frederick, who wanted to install aggressiveness into his officer corps. During the early 1730s, Folard was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1750 and died on 23 March 1752 in Avignon, where a number of public buildings and streets are named after.

| [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] First edition, richly illustrated, of the abridged version of the famous commentaries by the Chevalier de Folard, established by the Count of Chabot. 113 copperplate engravings - sometimes folding (Volume I: 51, volume 2: 22 and volume 3: 40) - representing techniques, battle scenes and war machines of Antiquity; including 4 maps and a plan of Cremona. Full speckled blonde calf binding. Spine with five raised bands decorated with red morocco title and volume labels and gilt compartments and fleurons; gilt dentelles at foot. All edges red. Two head caps worn, the third slightly rubbed. Some wormholes on the spine of the second volume. Two corners slightly bumped. Numerous scuffing. * Let us emphasize once again the importance of this work in the theory of military strategies. We owe to the Count of Chabot this edition which does not retain the entirety of Polybius's History, in 6 volumes in quarto, but is mainly focused on the commentaries. Military man and strategist, Folard would end up as fortress commander and Mestre de camp, Folard's project (who was nicknamed the French Vegetius) was to develop his ideas by commenting on Polybius's text. The work contains the famous treatise on the column, military formation of which Folard is the inventor, and the Treatise on the attack and defense of ancient fortifications.
