Il s'agit de la série la plus complète, qui inclut également les 11 nouvelles planches parues de 1818 à 1822 et numérotées de 105 à 115. Selon Vicaire,il est probable que les planches aient toutes été imprimées entre 1801 et 1822 et que seul le texte accompagnant les planches ait été réimprimé en 1827. Reliure demi-maroquin cerise à long grain et à coins, dos lisse orné de multiples filets longitudinaux, fers dorés au centre, titre estampé en tête et encadré de filets dorés, plats de papier à motifs, gardes et contreplats de papier à la cuve. Rousseurs principalement cantonnées aux 24 pp. de texte, les planches n'en portent que très peu, principalement aux marges et aux versos. Rare et célèbre recueil de murs, costumes et divertissements sous l'Empire et la Restauration, à très grandes marges et magnifiquement rehaussées en couleur à l'époque. Une véritable encyclopédie du frisson, du plaisir et de l'apparat, publié par le plus grand éditeur de mode en ce début de siècle : Pierre de la Mésangère. L'exemplaire se distingue par la présence des deux versions des planches 39, d'une insigne rareté. * Ces superbes estampes, gravées au cuivre par Georges Jacques Gatine, Schenker et d'autres ont été réalisées sur des dessins des plus grands peintres de la mode parisienne: Carle Vernet, Philippe-Louis Debucourt, Jean-Baptiste Isabey, Louis-Marie Lanté, Dutailly. Elles furent initialement vendues en supplément du périodique à succès Le Journal des Modes, avant d'être éditées en recueil. Quelques planches portent le nom du graveur et plusieurs celui des dessinateurs. Cette exceptionnelle galerie de figures est singulièrement représentative d'une période de l'histoire de France au cours de laquelle furent bousculées non seulement les valeurs matérielles, mais aussi morales et intellectuelles. On y peint une partie de la société féminine, frivole et hardie, soucieuse de plaire et versée dans les jeux de l'amour. L'ensemble allie à merveille la satire sociale et le raffinement attendu des gravures de mode. Il comporte les célèbres portraits des « Merveilleuses » et des « Incroyables », demoiselles du Directoire aux tenues extravagantes - représentations qui font aujourd'hui autorité. Belles odalisques allongées sur des lits à la grecque, ou provocantes courtisanes dévêties, tout est propice à la représentation aux atours de ces jolies coquettes, souvent accompagnées d'un aréopage de soupirants ou de domestiques. Robes, chapeaux, fourrures, côtoient d'élégantes silhouettes masculines en redingote ou même quelques travestis (Trois grâces parisiennes, n° 16). Nombre des scènes ont une connotation clairement érotique, notamment les jeux de salon propices aux embrassades et aux positions suggestives. La danse occupe une place de choix: pas moins de vingt planches figurent des danses de salon à la mode («Danse du Schall», du nom de cet accessoire qui faisait fureur, figures du quadrille comme «la Poule», « La Trénis», ou plus osées comme la Sauteuse), des ballets, ou même les célèbres danseurs de corde funambules, Ravel et Forioso. Le mouvementdes personnages se reflète dans les drapés des grandes robes de mousseline Empire, et des chevelures flottant au vent. Condizione: Near Fine. First Edition. A handsome and scarce hand-colored aquatint from the Age of Enlightenment, as a boy and girl essay a duet, he, on the violin, she, a lute, as a cat skulks under the music table. The hallmarks of the Enlightenment are the globe and telescope in the background, but also the idealized presentation of childhood, we think. N.d., circa early 19th century. The frame measures about 35 by 39 cm. The print itself, including the visible portion of the margin, is 16.5 by 19.5 cm. The frame and matting are attractive and we thus think virtually any buyer would be happy to retain it. The frame is gilt and green and some red speckling, and it has an Rococo band or Rinceaux, ornate, but in no way upstaging the picture. The matting has width, with ruled lines adjacent to the print itself and drawing us in as well as picking up the framing ruled line of the print itself. Debucourt (1755-1835) was a versatile painter and engraver. Mallet (1759-1835), too, was both a painter and engraver who collaborated with Debucourt often, we believe. The Latin credits at the base of the picture tell us that Debucourt did the original piece of artwork upon which the print was based, and Mallet took care of the printing. We should think, though, that there was some blurring of the roles of the two artists. We note that this isn't the only print the two collaborated on with the title of "La Musique". We haven't been able to locate another copy of this one, though. The print has a few faint stains, virtually unnoticeable unless one looks very closely. …
