En effet, Gustav Adolf Mossa, qui vécut toute sa vie à Nice où il était né en 1883, se consacra essentiellement à sa fonction de conservateur du musée des Beaux-arts de Nice, où son uvre symboliste et sulfureuse fut cachée, puis redécouverte dans les réserves seulement après sa mort en 1971. Des goûts très littéraires Gustav Adolf Mossa n appartient pas à la catégorie des artistes Fin de siècle, mais il s'inscrit parfaitement dans cet esprit. Il commence tardivement son uvre symboliste, à partir de 1902, alors que ce mouvement a fait ses derniers feux et réalise alors des aquarelles en s inspirant du pointillisme. Ses uvres évoluent vers une plus grande minutie dans le détail, devenant de véritables enluminures après 1910, évoquant aussi la peinture des artistes flamands au Moyen-Age. Mossa est nourri de lectures des écrivains et poètes de la décadence et même s il opte pour la peinture, il passe souvent à l écriture avec des pièces de théâtre et des poèmes. Il retranscrit parfois ses uvres peintes dans les textes en prose comme Dalila s amuse ou La Sirène repue. C est un lecteur passionné de ses contemporains et des grands auteurs en vogue auprès de ceux-ci, comme Shakespeare. Il hérite des décadents ce goût pour les choses étranges et pour la dérision, pour un exotisme de fuite, et se forge un univers particulier et anachronique en empruntant à l époque romaine, au Moyen Âge ou au début du XXe siècle. Eros et Thanatos Dans la mythologie grecque, Eros est le dieu de l Amour ; Thanatos est la personnification de la Mort. Gustav Adolf Mossa dans sa période symboliste explore l érotisme, mais au début de la Grande Guerre Thanatos prend le pas sur Eros. Avec l expérience traumatisante du conflit mondial, il évolue du symbolisme vers l allégorie. La femme est omniprésente dans l uvre de Gustav Adolf Mossa, sous l apparence de la Femme fatale, voire phallique et castratrice ; elle est ange et démon à la fois. Son uvre cristallise le conflit perpétuel des pulsions de vie et de mort. Il explore son propre inconscient avant que Sigmund Freud, le fondateur de la psychanalyse, ne développe ce thème. Il s intéresse à la guerre éternelle au c ur des relations humaines, particulièrement celles entre l homme et la femme. A l instar de Félicien Rops, symboliste belge, de nombreuses uvres de Gustav Adolf Mossa apparaissent encore provocantes de nos jours.
