Condizione: As New. Like new condition, no interior marksA short text (68 pages) that puts the tragic events of 9/11 into political context. The focus is on how the American political system will respond to the challenges posed by the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The author is interested in how the major institutions, such as the Presidency, the Congress, and our system of civil liberties and rights is changing to respond to this challenge. The book is well grounded in historical context as well, considering how other major crises have been handled. Other areas typically covered in an American government course, such as the media, religion, and public opinion are emphasized as well. Free when bundled.…

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Contrary to popular belief, the problem with U.S. higher education is not too much politics but too little. Far from being bastions of liberal bias, American universities have largely withdrawn from the world of politics. So conclude Bruce L. R. Smith, Jeremy Mayer, and Lee Fritschler in this illuminating book. C losed Minds? d draws on data from interviews, focus groups, and a new national survey by the authors, as well as their decades of experience in higher education to paint the most comprehensive picture to date of campus political attitudes. It finds that while liberals outnumber conservatives within faculty ranks, even most conservatives believe that ideology has little impact on hiring and promotion. Today's students are somewhat more conservative than their professors, but few complain of political bias in the classroom. Similarly, a Pennsylvania legislative inquiry, which the authors explore as a case study of conservative activism in higher education, found that political bias was ""rare"" in the state's public colleges and universities. Yet this ideological peace on campus has been purchased at a high price. American universities are rarely hospitable to lively discussions of issues of public importance. They largely shun serious political debate, all but ignore what used to be called civics, and take little interest in educating students to be effective citizens. Smith, Mayer, and Fritschler contrast the current climate of disengagement with the original civic mission of American colleges and universities. In concluding, they suggest how universities can reclaim and strengthen their place in the nation's political and civic life. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First Edition. M4 - A first edition (stated with numberline "98765432") hardcover book SIGNED by Jeremy Mayer on the half-title page in very good condition in very good dust jacket. Dust jacket has some wrinkling, chipping, and crease on the edges and corners, less than an inch tear with wrinkling, chipping and peeling on the front top right corner, scattered light scratches, rubbing and scuffing, light discoloration and shelf wear. Book has some bumped corners, wrinkling on the spine edges, light discoloration and shelf wear. 9.5"x6.5", 368 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Racial politics has permeated American presidential campaigns for more than half a century. From John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush, presidents-to-be and their adversaries have dealt with the problems and the opportunities presented by America's bitter racial divide. Some chose to embrace racial progress, others to play to the white backlash, and still others attempted to do both, often with surprising success. Jeremy D. Mayer has studied every presidential race from JFK's campaign in 1960 to George W. Bush's in 2000 and the crucial difference the black vote has made in each election. Mayer discusses in detail: *the 1960 election, where John F. Kennedy brilliantly straddled the civil rights issue. In an effort to satisfy white southerners, he spoke appeasing words to segregated white audiences, and to attract black voters, he called Coretta Scott King while her husband was imprisoned. *the 1976 primary race between Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford - the last time the black vote mattered for Republicans. Since then, the Republican path to the presidency has been almost entirely white, allowing Republicans to continue rightward on race without costs. Every Republican victory in the modern era has been a product of the incorrigibly white Republican coalition, a coalition nurtured even today by Bush's ambivalence toward the Confederate flag in 2000. *"the odd silence of Ronald Reagan,' who was known as a leading opponent of almost every civil rights bill and yet in his 1980 and 1984 campaigns largely avoided the topic. Mayer explains why Reagan's strategy was so successful. *the cynical exploitation of the fear of racial violence as a means to keep black voters loyal to the Democratic Party in the presidential elections of 1980, 1996, and 2000. Mayer shows how both parties have learned to play the race card with vicious effectiveness. By looking at this all-important aspect of our political life and coming up with new information, Mayer offers fresh insights into one of the most significant factors in our process of determining who governs us. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author.…
