After graduating from the Agnès Varda School of Photography in Brussels, it was the right time to visit my relatives in the Far East. Wilson "First snow of the year in Wilson makes everything look very beautiful," photographer Jerome De Perlinghi said of his picture titled "Always Happy" from January 2018. Jerome De Perlinghi | Special to Wide Awake Jerome De Perlinghi walks 8 to 10 miles a day, most of them with his 10-year-old German shepherd, Nealah. Along the way, De Perlinghi has toted a camera. "It was an easy way to combine healthy living, walking, healthy living for the dog walking with me and still try to be creative with the photographs," De Perlinghi said. De Perlinghi is the artistic director and chief organizer for Eyes on Main Street Outdoor Photo Festival in Wilson, which is currently preparing for its eighth edition. For the last six years he has been documenting the city of Wilson. His new book, "Wilson in Squares," has just been published by Wide Angle Press. The black and white pictures, all square and edged by black borders, will be the subject of a six-week exhibit beginning Wednesday at the Eyes on Main Street Goldsboro Gallery at 126-128 Goldsboro St. S. in downtown Wilson. When he sees a potential subject for a photograph, if something is not right for the picture, it is no problem. "You can come back tomorrow, an hour earlier, an hour later, very early in the morning, very late in the evening," De Perlinghi said. "Or simply wait for the snow to come. I think that will look good with snow." That is a decision De Perlinghi has made a lot, as there are a number of pictures in the book of a snow-covered Wilson. There are no people on the streets in Wilson in the photographs. De Perlinghi said he had already spent 30 months photographing people in Wilson in his first years here. "I haven't done a project with square images for a long time," De Perlinghi said. The photographer used a digital Fuji X100F range finder camera set to produce black and white images in a square format. "It was a project that I could do whenever I wanted to," De Perlinghi said. "I would say 85% of the photographs I shot less than 1 mile from my house. There are very few pictures taken past Ward Boulevard." De Perlinghi said photographing in a square format is another way to express himself. "I kind of enjoy it," De Perlinghi said. "It's like talking another language." The book's pictures were taken from 2016 to January of this year. "There are all kinds of little details. Although it is only 6 years old, some of the photographs, there is a lot of change," De Perlinghi said.
