ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 2001). (1997) 2001 2nd edition. 8vo (144 x 222mm). Ppxviii,225. B/w photographs. Green cloth, spine titled in pale yellow. Good-plus in rubbed, spine-faded dust-wrapper. "Cleverly weaving narrative with excerpts from Corbett's books and drawing on in-depth interviews with Corbett's friends, here is another biography of a truly incredible man - Jim Corbett of Kumaon - legendary big game hunter turned naturalist, writer, photographer and humanist. Although Corbett's six books offer several biographical details of his life, the portrait is often uneven and misses many links, for Corbett never believed that his personal life would interest anybody. Beginning in 1875, the year Corbett was born, the major part of the book deals with his life in India and ends in 1947 with his departure for Kenya with his sister Maggie to his death in April 1955. Jaleel's writing is smooth and gentle as it recalls and analyses the life and legend of Jim Corbett. What emerges is an affectionate portrait from an admiring biographer who has said that 'to conceal Corbett's weakness would only undermine his strengths'." Chapters include:- Jim Corbett's India; Why tigers and leopards become man-eaters; Early days; Life in Mokameh Ghat; Under the shadow of man-eaters; Naturalist; The books; Businessman and politician; Humanitarian; Jim Corbett - the man and the legend; Why Africa?; Life in Nyeri; Tree Tops; Last days; Maggie - the silent partner; The Corbett National Park; The tiger slayers of India; Photographing tigers; The Chirgudi man-eater; Letters and reminiscences; Corbett's will; Chronology. .

Hardcover. Condizione: As New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. Photographs (illustratore). 1st Edition. Rare Signed by the Author! First Hard cover edition from Longmans India. Here is a fascinating biography of an iconic hero - Col. Jim Corbett, the slayer of man eating tigers and leopards that roamed the Himalayan foot hills nearly a century ago between 1907 and 1938. His Man eaters of Kumaon ( first published in 1944 in Bombay) has been read by millions around the world. He wrote 5 more books before his death in 1955. But Jim Corbett was more than a hunter; he was a dead shot, first class naturalist, a brilliant author, humanitarian, businessman and photographer. He masterminded in opening of India s first National Park - The Hailey Park- in 1935, now renamed ss the Corbett National Park, a solid home for Indian tigers. This book is the result of an extensive research that spanned three decades, travelling to India, Kenya, England, US, Canada and Sweden to meet and interview Corbett s friends, relatives and publishers, and collected hitherto unpublished material and photographs including a manuscript titled The Chirgudi Man eater, written by his friend Col. Ramsay before the First World War. Many of these original findings were used by several other authors including Martin Booth in 1986. This title was originally published in Canada in 1997 by the Jim Corbett Foundation, established by the author in 1997 immediately after Corbett s neglected gravesite was restored, as a limited edition of 1000 copies. This much revised and updated edition was published as a hardcover in 2001 in India and the UK by Orient Longmans and Sangam books, estimated to be no less than 20,000 copies, of which just 100 copies were signed by the author, and of that only handful copies are left in stock. Extremely scarce, hailed by the critics around the world, as the best Corbett biography ever written , this biography has been copied by various other biographers, as this is the real biography with Facts. New, XVIII + 225+ 16 pages of photo plates, First hardcover edition, Fine in Fine Dust jacket and Signed by the author on the title page: A collector s item. (see images). Signed by Author(s).
