Please refer to photos. **First published in Spanish in 1605 and 1612, Don Quixote became a foundational novel of the western canon, and in foreign translation from the early days of publication. Irish Translator CHARLES JERVAS's [misspelled Jarvis] (1675-1739) version is a classic. The Irish translator was also an artist and poet. The work of British Artists SAMUEL SHELLEY (c.1750-1808) and THOMAS STOTHARD (1755-1834) also make this a notable illustrated version of the celebrated Spanish novel. Shelley was a miniaturist, watercolor artist and a co-founder of the Watercolor Society. Biographer F.M. O'Donoghue called him "one of the most charming and fashionable miniaturists of his time, ranking with Cosway, Smart, and Collins." (DNB) Stothard apprenticed as a draughtsman in fabric design, and later became engaged in book illustration and portraiture. He and Samuel Shelley lodged together in The Strand from 1778. Stothard's work was shown at The Royal Academy around this time, and he also enjoyed the mentorship of portraitist Sir Joshua Reynolds and landscape artist Richard Wilson. Many of his illustrations were published in the popular press, although it was a print artist and book illustrator for which he became famous. Some of his works were engraved by the young William Blake. (Monkhouse, DNB). Worldcat 975142591; cf. Biblioteca Central, Barcelona. Catalogo de la colleccíon cervantina. (AMJ). Anker Smith, Samuel Shelley, Thomas Stothard et al (illustratore). Book.

Complete two volume first edition set of the Jervas translation. Bindings need professional repair for Volume I's front board is detached with slender splitting to rear joint although with rear board still firm; likewise Volume II's joints have splitting with some pliability to front board but with its rear board still firm - so…ld as is. Hardcovers: H 28cm x L 22cm. Uniformly bound in contemporary (mid to late 1700s) full tree leather; boards rubbed with some old surface losses at bottom margins; shelf-wear to boards' gilt tooled edges; boards' gilt inner dentelles remain reasonably bright; spines retain their gilt tooled compartments and original dark red title labels and black volume# labels. No bookbinder marks present but likely the set is the product of a higher-end London bindery. Both volumes share the same Tonson and Dodsley 1742 London imprint and their title pages credit translator Charles Jarvis which is an incorrect spelling of his surname as it should be "Jervas" (the misspelling also occurs on the spine titles which specify "Jarvis's Don Quixote"). Each volume retains its original sewn-in dark green silk ribbon page markers although the usual expected fraying at their bottom ends. Marbled endpapers; both volumes have mid-18th century style armorial bookplate of Andrew Lindegren on their respective front pastedowns (which may or may not be Swedish immigrant iron ore importer Andrew Lindegren, ?-1783, of Portsmouth, England). Some light toning and scattered foxing to leaves. Text blocks are firm. ***** VOLUME I. Collates as [fp], [ffep], [ffly], [ffly], [first frontis plate], i-xxiv, [8], xxv-xxxii, [second frontis plate], [8], 1-88, [6], [6], [plate], 1-6, [plate], 7-14, [plate], 15-22, [plate], 23-30, [plate], 31-42, [plate], 43-46, [plate], 47-64, [plate], 65-74, [plate], 75-76, [plate], 77-90, [plate], 91-100, [plate], 101-108, [plate], 109-112, [plate], 113-130, [plate], 131-150, [plate], 151-170, [plate], 171-184, [plate], 185-234, [plate], 235-236, [plate], 237-246, [plate], 247-278, [plate], 279-298, [plate], 299-306, [plate], 307-310, [plate], 311-350, [plate], 351-355; [rfly], [rfly], [rfep], [rp]. First edition of the Jervas translation. Two volumes. Contemporary mottled calf, five raised bands, gilt decorated compartments, titles in gilt to the spine. Bound with: 'The life of Michael de Cervantes Saavedra. Written by Don Gregorio Mayáns and Sisár' (the first English translation 1738); 'A supplement to the translator's pr…eface' more commonly know as 'A dissertation on the origin of books of chivalry' by William Warburton; 'Advertisment concerning the Prints' by John Oldfield. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 67 copper plates engraved by Gerard van der Gucht from drawings by John Vanderbank and an additional frontispiece engraved by George Virtue after a drawing by G. Kent. Decorative head and tail pieces and initial letters. The bindings are square and firm with minor surface wear to the boards and corners. The original spines laid down and refurbished at the joints and tips. The contents, with near paper strengthening to the inner hinge of volume I, light browning to the margins and a short closed tear to the fore-edge of one plate, are otherwise in good order throughout. An attractive example of the first edition of this esteemed translation. Jervas (1675-1739), consistently misspelled on editions of his translation as 'Jarvis', was a portrait painter and translator. "Jervas entered the literary circle of Addison, Pope, and Swift, setting up his home and studio in London in Cleveland Court, Westminster. He was hailed by Richard Steele in The Tatler of 16 April 1709 a 'the last great painter Italy has sent to us'. As well as literary friends, Jervas also had an influential patron in the prime minister Sir Robert Walpole. Jervas played an important role in acquiring works of art for Walpole's ever expanding collection, as well as contributing his own portraits. His major literary undertaking was an English translation of Cervantes' Don Quixote. Published posthumously in 1742 and frequently reprinted, it is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original" ODNB.
