Aggiungi al carrelloProbable first edition (no direct statement; dare only on title page). xxvi, 409, [1] pages. Hardcover: H 21.75cm x L 14.25cm. No dust jacket. Blue cloth in a older rebinding (Harper's evidently issued the book in brown cloth); light mottling to front board and spine with strong mottling to rear board; spine's gilt stamping rema…ins bright; some bumping and scuffing at spine ends and board corners. Reddish-brown top edge; red colored fore-edge and bottom edge. Light toning to newer endpapers; foxing to early and late leaves but interior pages are mostly clean. Leaves likely slightly trimmed when rebound as margins are uneven. Further hints to the rebinding are that front free endpaper is immediately followed by half-title and page 409 verso (publisher's unnumbered advertising page) is immediately followed by rear free endpaper with no interlaying flyleaves. Frontispiece retains tissue guard sheet. Binding is firm. Still an attractive volume. Captain Montagu S. Wellby recounts his adventures travelling through Abyssinia from the capital Addis Ababa to Cairo, Egypt in December 1898. The book was published posthumously as Wellby was killed in South Africa in August 1900 during the Second Boer War. Wellby also authored a well regarded travelogue titled THROUGH UNKNOWN TIBET which was published in 1898. Please note that this thick book has an approximate shipping weight of 3.75 pounds (1.7 kg) and may require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
