Da heute wissenschaftliche Großprojekte nur noch auf politischen Wegen zu realisieren sind und umgekehrt Großmachtpolitik ohne Anwendung der gesamten wissenschaftlichen Instrumente und Methoden nicht getrieben werden kann, erübrigt sich natürlich die Frage, ob die Wissenschaftler als Herren oder Sklaven der Politik zu betrachten seien.: wer geraubt, geworben und bezahlt werden kann, ist allemal der Sklave. Was der Autor im Niemandsland zwischen Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften beobachtet hat, ist klare Feststellung und bekümmerter Appell: eine Verwandlung des totalen kalten Krieges in einen totalen Frieden ist nur über eine Bewußtseinsänderung der Menschen zu erhoffen. Bewundernswert ist die Fülle des historischen und aktuellen Materials, über alle Maßen erfreulich die Präzision, mit der die exakten Kerne einer Entdeckung, Erfindung oder Denkumwälzung dargestellt werden. Mit seinen zahlreichen Porträt-Abbildungen hat das situationsbedeutende, in vielen Disziplinen beschlagene Werk Grundlagencharakter. " E.
