Fragt man die Menschen dagegen, ob ihnen Brehms Tierleben" etwas sagt, dann sind die Antworten immer positiv. Es ist das Standardwerk für die Zoologie schlechthin. Die 3. Ausgabe von 1890 wurde zum ersten Mal mit Darstellungen von Wilhelm Kuhnert farbig illustriert. Die dann auf seinen Expeditionen erworbenen Erfahrungen flossen erst in die 4. Auflage ein. Hier zeigte er die Tiere in ihrer biotop getreuen Umgebung, eine für die damalige Zeit gewaltige Neuerung. Diese Auflage, die im Bereich ihrer Illustrationen anschließend nicht mehr überarbeitet wurde, erwarb sich bei Laien und Fachleuten größte Anerkennung und ist bis heute weltweit populär. Insgesamt unternahm Wilhelm Kuhnert vier Reisen nach Afrika, davon drei in die deutsche Kolonie in Ostafrika und eine auf Einladung des Königs von Sachsen in den Sudan und nach Ägypten. Das vorliegende Buch zeigt an 72 überwiegend farbigen Abbildungen (Skizzen, Ölgemälde und Zeichnungen) das künstlerische Schaffen des berühmten Tiermalers.
