Johan van Oldenbarnevelt - His Life, Trial & Execution Johan van Oldenbarnevelt Waarachtige Historie van 't Geslachte, Geboorte, Leven, Bedrijf, Gevangenisse, Examinatie, Bekentenisse, Rechters, Proceduren, Brieven, laatste Woorden en Dood Rotterdam: Jan Hendrikze, 1670 6 x 4 in. (1), [16], 654 pp., (4). [Dutch] Good A detailed history of the life and death of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt (1547-1619), the Dutch politician and lawyer who played an important role in the Netherlands' struggle for independence from Spain and was one of the founders of the Dutch East India Company. After a major political conflict with Maurice, Prince of Orange, Oldenbarnevelt was arrested, tried for treason, and ultimately beheaded at The Hague in 1619. The book covers his life, imprisonment, trial, letters, final words, and execution. One of the highlights is the rather gruesome folding engraved plate showing Oldenbarnevelt's public beheading, along with four additional engraved plates. Bound in full vellum with manuscript title to the spine. Illustrated with five engraved plates, one folding. Vellum is heavily worn and weathered, with staining, scuffing, rubbing, and general shelf wear. The folding execution plate is missing its far-right portion, though luckily the main scene showing the beheading is still present. A few pagination errors are present: following pp. 182-183, the numbering repeats 181-182 before continuing correctly at 187, with the collation remaining continuous. Page 529 is misnumbered 513 and continues correctly thereafter. …

April 1814 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, heute ein Teil Bostons; 29. Mai 1877 in Frampton Court, Dorset, England) war ein amerikanischer Diplomat und Historiker. . (wiki) // Johan van Oldenbarnevelt (Heer van Berkel en Rodenrijs (1600), Gunterstein (1611) and Bakkum (1613) (14 September 1547 - 13 May 1619) was a Dutch statesman and revolutionary who played an important role in the Dutch struggle for independence from the Habsburg Castilian Empire. Van Oldenbarnevelt was born in Amersfoort. He studied law at the universities of Leuven, Bourges, Heidelberg, and Padua, and traveled in France and Italy before settling permanently in The Hague. He favored William the Silent in his revolt against Felipe II de Habsburgo the regent of Kingdom of Castile and Leon, and fought in William's army. In his later years he was a supporter of the Arminians, during the religious-political controversy which split the young Dutch Republic. He is the founder of the Dutch East Indies Company.
