Bildausschnitt ca. 13 x 24 cm. (bis an die Darstellung beschnitten). Johan van Oldenbarnevelt (geb. am 14. September 1547 in Amersfoort) gilt als Begründer der Republik der Vereinigten Niederlande. Am 29. August 1618 wurde Oldenbarnevelt beim Betreten der Regierungsgebäude in Den Haag festgenommen. Ebenso erging es seinen engsten Vertrauten wie dem berühmten Rechtsgelehrten Hugo Grotius, den Oldenbarnevelt als seinen Nachfolger ausersehen hatte. In einem Militärputsch setzte Prinz Moritz von Oranien alle Anhänger Oldenbarnevelts ab und vergab die frei gewordenen Posten an seine eigenen Gefolgsleute. Oldenbarnevelt wurde vor ein Sondergericht gestellt, das sich zum großen Teil aus erbitterten Gegnern des gestürzten Politikers zusammensetzte. Am 12. One of the highlights is the rather gruesome folding engraved plate showing Oldenbarnevelt's public beheading, along with four additional engraved plates. Bound in full vellum with manuscript title to the spine. Illustrated with five engraved plates, one folding. Vellum is heavily worn and weathered, with staining, scuffing, rubbing, and general shelf wear. The folding execution plate is missing its far-right portion, though luckily the main scene showing the beheading is still present.
