Written by Johann Andreas Cramer, an associate of Gellert. Illustrated, with a folding frontispiece of Gellert's grave monument in St John, Leipzig and a folding plate list of his donors and patrons preceding the half-title. Prior owner's stamp to the title page, A StB. Loosely inserted is several leaves of notes, written in copperplate and in German. Prior owner's notes to the recto and verso of front endpaper. Christian Furchtegott Gellert was a notable figure during the Enlightenment. Contemporaneously, his writings were one of the most widely read. He was a professor of poetry for many years in Leipzig. He met the author of this memoir, Johann Andreas Cramer, during his studies. Cramer was a German theologian during the Enlightenment era. This work is regarded as the first biography of Gellert, who was such a notable figure in German culture and literature in the eighteenth century. In a full calf binding. Goedeke IV/I, 75. b. und 69.10. - Bieler Nachdruckausgabe, ein Jahr nach der Originalausgabe bei Weidmann in Leipzig. Gedruckt und verlegt durch Niklaus Heilmann,(1739 - 1816) Sohn des aus Marburg stammenden, 1734 in Biel eingewanderten Johann Christoph Heilmann (1702 - 1773), der seit 1734 in Biel als Drucker und Verleger tätig war. Niklaus Heilmann versuchte, wenig erfolgreich, das schleppende Geschäft mit religiösen Traktaten und dem Privileg zum Druck der protestantischen französischen Bibel für Biel, den Südjura und Yverdon, mit der Produktion von Nachdrucken literarischer Erfolgsautoren zu verbessern. Dabei kam er natürlich der Typographischen Gesellschaft von Bern und dem Berner Verlag Walthard in die Quere. Die Berner Verleger erwirkten eine Importsperre für die Produkte aus Biel. 1788 war Heilmann nicht mehr in der Lage das Geschäft weiter alleine zu führen. Er assoziierte sich mit dem Basler Verleger Thurneysen der wiederum schon nach 3 Jahren die Druckerei weiterverkaufte. Von Gellert druckte er 1771 die "Moralischen Vorlesungen" nach, so wie im gleichen Jahr eine Briefauswahl. Die vorliegende Biographie mit einem Anhang mit Gedichte auf Gellerts Tod von Cramer, Christian Felix Weise, Michael Denis und Carl Mastalie. Berühmt wurde Heilmann durch seine, im gleichen Jahr erschienene erste Sammelausgabe von Goethes Schriften. - Vorsatz und Titel mit alten Besitzvermerken. Vorsätze mit hübschen Marmorpapiervorsätzen. Der dekorative Einband mit 3 kleinen Wurmspuren auf dem Hinterdeckel. Sprache: deutsch.
