Johann Kaempf, "bekannt durch seine Empfehlung der "Visceralklystiere", war als Sohn eines Arztes Johann Philipp Kaempf in Zweibriicken am 14. Mai 1726 geboren. Er studirte in Basel und…promovirte daselbst 1753 mit der: "Diss. de infarctu vasorum ventriculi", einer Schrift, in der bereits die ersten Andeutungen über die in einer späteren Abhandlung ausführlicher dargelegten Grundsätze, betreffend die eigentümliche Behandlung der Unterleibskrankheiten, sich finden. Bald nach seiner Promotion wurde er als Leibarzt an den Hof des Landgrafen von Hessen-Homburg berufen, erhielt 1770 einen Ruf in gleicher Eigenschaft und als Badearzt von Ems an den. Hof des Prinzen von Oranien-Nassau, wurde 1778 Leibarzt des Fürsten von Hessen-Nassau, gab aber 1787 diese Stellung auf und zog sich mit dem Titel eines Geheimraths nach Homburg zurück. Auf einer Besuchsreise nach Hanau starb er daselbst am 29. October 1787. Kaempf war ein tüchtiger Praktiker und verdankt seinen Hauptruhm der Empfehlung der erwähnten Heilmethode, deren Erfinder eigentlich sein Vater war, welcher die während 30jähriger Praxis damit gemachten Beobachtungen seinem Sohne mittheilte, der sie, ausser in der oben genannten Dissertation, in der Schrift: "Für Aerzte und Kranke bestimmte Abhandlung von einer neuen Methode, die hartnäckigsten Krankheiten, die ihren Sitz im Unterleibe haben, besonders die Hypochondrie, sicher und gründlich zu heilen" (Dessau 1784; 2. Aufl. Leipzig 1785) zugleich mit der: "Beantwortung der dagegen gemachten Einwendungen" (Ebenda 1786; Auszug von MÖLLER, Hanau 1788; Augsburg 1790; Ebenda 1791; holländ. Uebers. von KONING, Utrecht 1787) veröffentlichte. Es beruhte diese Theorie auf der STAHL'schen Lehre von der Unterleibsplethora resp. den Unterleibsinfarcten als der Ursache der meisten chronischen Krankheiten, zu deren Bekämpfung von Kaempf die Application erweichender, aus verschiedenen Pflanzeninfusen bereiteter, sogenannter "Visceralklystiere" empfohlen wurde. - Ausßerdem verfasste Kaempf noch: "Kurze Abhandlung von den Temperamenten" (Schaffbausen und Frankfurt 1760) - "Enchiridium medicum" (Frankfurt und Leipzig 1778; Frankfurt 1788; Ibid. 1792; deutsch von DÖRB, Chemnitz 1794; von BAEHRENS, Dortmund und Leipzig 1796), ein beliebtes Lehrbuch, und verschiedener Artikel im "Magazin von Hanau" und in "BALDINGER'S Magazin".
