Goed. IV/1, 91, 9; Veitenheimer, Mannheim, 1032. - Posthum erschienene, erste Ausgabe. - Der 1781 in Worms geborenen Johann Nikolas Götz studierte 1739-42 in Halle Theologie. Nach verschiedenen Hauslehrer und Predigerstellen, erhielt er eine Pfarrstelle im Pfälzischen und lebte seit 1761 in Winterburg bei Kreuznach, wo er 1781 als Superintendent starb. "Mit den in Halle gefundenen Freunden Gleim und Uz bildet G. das Triumvirat in der anakreontischen Lyrik des 18. Jahrhunderts. Anakreon, den er zusammen mit Uz in reimlose Verse übersetzte (1746), "hatte "besonderen Einfluß auf Themen, Motive und Formen (vers irréguliers) seiner Gedichte. Aus Furcht vor der Entdeckung der Identität des geistlichen Würdenträgers und des Verfassers scherzhaft erotischer Lyrik ließ er seine Verse nur anonym, zum größten Teil in Anthologien, Almanachen etc. verstreut, erscheinen. Den Zeitgenossen galten seine Poesien als vollkommene Verwirklichung des Stilideals reizvoller "Nachlässigkeit". Herder schätzte ihn sehr und verglich seine Gedichte mit "schönen Cameen": "Außer der griechischen Anthologie hat vielleicht keine Sprache einen solchen Schatz an Allegorien und Blumenkränzen als unsre an diesem Dichter."
