Aggiungi al carrelloOblong small folio 11 1/2 x 13 inches, bound in full period calf, worn. Engraved title, torn and creased, 6 pages and 146 ENGRAVED PLATES by Melchior Kusell after Johann Wilhelm Baur. Biblical, allegorical, mythological, symbolic and topographical prints- many of the Biblical scenes are engraved within Italianate backgrounds- NU…MEROUS VIEWS OF ITALY AND ITALIAN GARDENS. The plates include the following and the numeration is scattered throughout the book- The first 32 plates are all Italianate views with ships in them (Naples, Venice), followed by 14 plates of Italian gardens, houses, views- including a rare print of a ball game (47) and another of a dance (43). 2 prints of horses, 12 further decorative pastoral scenes including one of mountain and pines. 3 battles, approximately 51 scenes from the Bible, 10 large allegorical images of WOMEN (virtues and vices) and 3 male, and a final plate of Eve being tempted by the devil (damage to the margin). Some marginal splits. 2 marginal blobs. Old blindstamp to the final blank endpaper. Plates untitled. SUPERB OLD MASTER PRINTS. BAUR, JOHANN WILHELM - Joan Guiliam Bouwer, or Bauer (1607-1640) was a German engraver, etcher and miniature painter. Melchior Kusell, engraver and publisher 1626-1683. Bibliography- Berlin Kat 4294 and Brunet 1 (707). The collation does not conform to the Berlin Kat as plates are numbered 1-148 with omissions (plates 88 and 130) but the total number of 146 plates concurs. Berlin suggests it is numbered in sections. Brunet suggests there were two issues of the same date.
