The book consists of "a series of designs for cottages, decorated cottages, small villas, and other buildings, accompanied by hints on situation, construction, arrangement…and decoration, in the theory & practice of rural architecture; interspersed with some observations on landscape gardening". The original edition was first published in 1818; the book was reprinted from the original in 2005 and subsequently printed in a limited edition of six books with colour plates by The Happy Books in 2013 (see image) of which this copy is one. Dark green boards with gilt titles to the spine on a bright red label. Top and lower page-edges are foxed but otherwise in very good condition.

He discusses the 'astonishing contrast the house is to the landscape around it. One expects to find tumble down farm sheds and aerodrome hangers and even, I suppose, atomic power stations, but certainly not a wonderfully cared for Georgian masterpiece and it is this sense of surprise and amazement with which one comes across it which lends it a very unique kind of enchantment.' He hopes that if the house is still open to visitors the following summer, 'it will be possible to bring some of our friends down for a visit as part of our programme'. He concludes: 'Kenneth Kaunda joins me in thanking you again for your kindness and friendly reception.'.
