This scarce book is notable for its charming Ardizzone drawings and its role in presenting Betjeman's verse in an accessible, lightly whimsical format for children. It is a curated anthology designed to introduce younger readers to Betjeman's distinctive blend of humour, nostalgia, and rhythmic storytelling. The selection was made by Irene Slade, who also provides an introductory note contextualising Betjeman's appeal for children. Re LL 2. Edward Ardizzone (illustratore).

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. A wonderful hardback book, virtually unused, comes with nice maroon coloured box, slipcase. The book is in excellent clean, condition. Normal wear, marks and tear apply consistent with use and age. First published by The Folio Society in 2004. 222 pages all intact, all pages, text and lovely illustrations are in excellent, clean, readable order. Typeset in Walbaum at The Folio Society, printed in Great Britain by Cambridge University press on Blackfriars Wove Paper and Bound by them in Cloth printed with a design by Peter Bailey. Introduction: "John Betjeman was probably the most popular poet in Britain in the Twentieth century, but this does not mean that his work is simple or easy to explain. To write verse that rhymed and scanned was an achievement in its self in the age of vers libre; to make it sensitive, intelligent, frequently funny, but more often very sad, was the last thing one could have expected. The received view of Betjeman's poetry would enumerate suburbs, Amazonian tennis girls, the Church of England and Cornish seascapes among the subject matter, but although these are present there is much else besides." Another stunning book from The Folio Society.
