Leather. Condizione: Very Good. First edition. The scarce first edition of the first Dryden-Tonson miscellany, a landmark anthology containing Dryden's Mac "Flecknoe," "Absalom and Achitophel" and "The Medall" alongside major classical translations. In a later half calf binding over marbled paper boards, endpapers renewed. First edition of the first volume of the celebrated Tonson-Dryden miscellanies, the influential series of six poetic anthologies issued by Jacob Tonson between 1684 and 1709. ESTC No.: R297. Signatures: [A]4 B-X8 Y4; 2A-C8 2D8 (D4 + "D5" + 2) 2E8 2F4. Collated, complete. Retaining the final advertisement page. The collection opens with three major satires by Dryden: Mac Flecknoe, Absalom and Achitophel, and The Medall. These are followed by translations from Ovid's Elegies and Horace's Odes, numerous prologues and epilogues, and a substantial concluding section devoted to translations of Virgil's Eclogues. Contributors include Thomas Creech, Sir Charles Sedley, the Earl of Roscommon, Richard Duke, Thomas Otway, Nahum Tate and others. In a later half calf binding with marbled paper boards, endpapers renewed. Externally, very smart. Minor shelf wear to extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages characteristically age toned with light soiling to first and last few leaves. The odd spot and handling mark, heavier to fore edge. Several leaves with pronounced contemporary ink offsetting, resulting in mirrored impressions from the facing pages, in places quite heavy and partially obscuring the printed text, occurring more prominently to gatherings after O1. These leaves remain legible, if slightly more difficult to parse. Slight loss to lower corner of F3, affecting one or two words. Very Good. None Stated (illustratore). book.…

Hardcover (Full Leather). Condizione: Good Condition. First Edition. A sammelband of four pamphlets in a later (failed) calf binding. Front cover detached, rar hinge cracked, much worn and dry. Scattered paper flaws intnerally, some chipping, messily opened pages, but generally very good internally. Comprising three (of four) of the Newest and Most Ingenious Poems along with a collection of poems on affairs of state (the middle of three that were published) by Andrew Marvell and others (Marvell is not named until the third collection, but barely disguised in volumes 1 and 2 - here as A. M______ in "A Dialogue Between Two Horses" and on the title page). They are all printed in 1689, the year the The Glorious Revolution became official as James II fled to Ireland and Mary & William ascended the throne in what has been aptly described as the last successful invasion of England. Bound with the separate title pages; the 3rd (32pp), The 4th (33pp); 2nd Part of Poems on Affairs of State (30pp); and the 2nd (31pp). Each complete. Everyone was getting behind the new power structure - out with tyranny and Catholicism, in with constitutional monarchy and the Dutch, and these rapidly released short books of poetry on current events are fascinating artifacts of this moment. Unbound. Condizione: Very Good. A very scarce poetry collection from the late seventeenth century. Written by several noted satirists of the time. There are poems on Oliver Cromwell's career, the death of Lord Shaftsbury as well as an essay on Satire by John Dryden. Comprising of: I. A Panegyrick on O. Cromwell, and his Victories: By E. The City-Mallad. 1682. These poems and satires are commentaries of topical subjects that are highly relevant to the seventeenth century. For example 'A Letany for the Fifth of November 1684' discusses the gun-powder plot. This anthology gives an idea of the political and social climate of the late seventeenth century. A fascinating collection of satires and poems, by John Dryden, Edmund Waller and Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux, Most of these poems had not been printed before and appear here in their first edition form. ESTC Reference no. R24041. With the signatures; A1, B-E4, F1 D2 is stated as C2 and pages 33 and 34 are misnumbered as called for. D3 is closely trimmed to the bottom edge and therefore the catchword is lost. Disbound. Externally, generally smart. Minor damp stain to the rear wrap. Repair to the rear wrap at the gutter towards the head of the page. This affects the first word to first few lines of page 34. Loss to the title page affecting the date of publication. Spot to the bottom corner to most leaves, heaviest to the rear wrap. Very Good. None (illustratore). book.…

An excellent complete set which encapsulates English theatre in the Age of Garrick. The plays within represent the hits of the London stage from the Restoration to the 1770s. Each title-page notes that the text includes notation from the manager and prompter's books, which provides some insight into the manner in which these plays were actually performed. The 61 frontispieces depict the stars of the London stage in costumed performance.
