Woolley, who ran as the presidential candidate for the Prohibition Party in 1900, here takes stock of the Temperance movement's growth in the 19th century. His co-author William E. "Pussyfoot" Johnson i…s the namesake of a non-alcoholic cocktail developed by the Embassy Club in London. The recipient, Wesley Spragg (1848-1930), was a major temperance campaigner in New Zealand and was president of the Auckland Province No-License Council for 20 years. He likely received the inscription during Woolley's tour of the country in 1905, credited for its impact on the local prohibition movement. Spragg's ownership signature on the front free endpaper has been struck through by a later owner. Octavo. Lacking one plate and one text leaf. Portrait frontispiece of Woolley, 22 (of 23) double-sided plates of Temperance figures, lacking plate facing pp. 94-95. Pp. 219/20 and 387/8 cancelled, the former correctly, the latter mistakenly with a duplicate pp. 219/20. Original blue pebbled cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Front free endpaper with ownership inscriptions and bookseller's stamp of Brooking & Son, Auckland. A little rubbing to cloth and wear to corners, occasional soiling and pencil annotations. A good copy.
