The National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP), formerly the National Committee on Radiation Protection and Measurements, and before that the Advisory Committee on X-Ray and Radium Protection (ACXRP), is a U.S. organization. It has a congressional charter under Title 36 of the United States Code, but this does not imply any sort of oversight by Congress; NCRP is not a government entity. The Advisory Committee on X-Ray and Radium Protection was established in 1929. Initially, the organization was an informal collective of scientists seeking to proffer accurate information and appropriate recommendations for radiation protection. In 1946, the organization changed its name to the National Committee on Radiation Protection and Measurements. In 1964, the U.S. Congress reorganized and chartered the organization as the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements. Lauriston S. Taylor was an American physicist known for his work in the field of radiation protection and measurement. He established standards for X-ray radiation exposure for the first time in the 1920s. Dr. Harley was director of the Environmental Measurements Laboratory of the United States Department of Energy in Manhattan. He had joined the Atomic Energy Commission in 1949 as chief of the analytical division of what became its Health and Safety Laboratory, the predecessor of the present institution. He spent more than half a century in the field of environmental radioactivity and established methods and systems for the analysis of airborne materials and biological samples. He used them to assess the occupational exposures left in production plants after the Manhattan Project. Safety Analyst for A.E.C. As chief safety analyst in the A.E.C. laboratories in New York, he evaluated research on nuclear fallout sampled at more than 100 sites worldwide. In one instance, a Nevada test and a downpour of 0.58 inches of rain on New York City in 1953 made radioactivity levels in the city's atmosphere jump to seven times the normal amount. Concern over such occurrences, and people then worrying about strontium 90 in their milk, led the National Academy of Sciences in 1956 to set forth safe levels for Dr. Harley and his agency to use as a yardstick in monitoring radioactivity. He was the author of more than 100 scientific articles and reports.

Hardcover. Presumed first edition/first printing. vii, [1], 440 p. 24 cm. Illustrations. Index. Dr. John Harley was with the Atomic Energy Commission. Dr. Stephen WIberley was with the Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute. This book was written as a text for a course in instrumental analysis given to senior and graduate chemisty students at the Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute. From an obituary posted on-line: "Dr. Stephen E. Wiberley, 87, of The Terrace at Hawthorne Ridge, East Greenbush, N.Y., died Saturday, March 17, 2007 at Samaritan Hospital. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Irving C. and Ruth Stanley Wiberley. He was a 1941 graduate of Williams College and earned his M.S. in 1948 and Ph.D. in 1950 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. During World War II, he served in the United States Army and worked on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Dr. Wiberley spent his entire career at Rensselaer, retiring as professor emeritus in 1989. He taught a wide range of courses, and conducted important research in a number of areas, including extraction of oil from oil shale and extraction of useful materials from hazardous silicone waste. He was appointed dean of the graduate school in 1964 and vice provost in 1969. He served in those positions until 1979. He was chairman of the Chemistry Department from 1983 to 1988. For many years, he led an interdisciplinary program in materials research that was funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and led to the construction of Rensselaer's Materials Research Center. He was among the leaders in efforts to build the Richard G. Folsom Library, and served as acting librarian in 1970 and 1971. He was the co-author of two books, Instrumental Analysis (1954) with John Harley, Introduction to Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy (1964, 1975, 1990) with Norman W. Colthrup, and Lawrence J. Daly. He also wrote his memoirs, No Ivory Tower, in 2005. " Good. No dust jacket. Highlighting/underlining. Signed by previous owner. Some pencil underlining and marginal markings noted. Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Symposium on Radionuclides in the Food Chain, sponsored by the Interna tional Life Sciences Institute in association with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, was intended to bring together policymakers and other representatives of the food industry with radiation experts involved in measuring and assessing radioactivity in foodstuffs. The symposium was made timely by the problems arising from the nuclear reactor accident at Chernobyl, in the USSR, which brought out the lack of international agreement on guidance for responding to such radionuclide contamination of food and foodstuffs. The presentations by the radiation experts covered the sources of radionu clides-natural radioactivity, fallout from nuclear weapons tests, routine releases from nuclear facilities, and various nuclear accidents. The speakers represented a broad distribution in both scientific disciplines and international geographic origin. They summarized the available data on measurements and indicated the current procedures for assessing radiation exposure. It was hoped that the food industry representatives would bring out the problems posed to industry and governments by the presence of radioactivity in food.
