Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Very faint shelfwear.; Archaeologists are increasingly focusing on the transformation of artifacts from their use in the past to their appearance in the archaeological record, trying to identiy the natural and cultural processes that created the archaeological record we study today. In Classical… Archaeology, attention to these processes received an impetus by J. Theodore Pena's 2007 monograph, Roman Pottery in the Archaeological Record, which considered how ceramic vessels were made, used and stayed in use serving various secondary purposes, before finally being discarded. Pena relied mainly on evidence from Roman Italy, which raises the question of the impact of similar cultural forces on pottery from other periods and places. His work accentuates the need to continue the process of building and developing explicit interpretive models of ceramic life-histories in Mediterranean archeology. With a view to beginning to address these challenges, the editors invited a group of specialists in the pottery of Greece and the rest of the Eastern Mediterranean to a colloquium in Athens in June 2008, asking the contributors to recondiser Pena's general models, approaches and examples from their own particular geographic and cultural perspectives. This publication constitutes the proceedings of this colloquium.; GÃ sta Enbom Monographs 1; 9.6 X 8.9 X 0.7 inches; 168 pages.

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. 1st Edition. 235 pages : illustrations (some color), maps ; 28 cm. This second and final volume on the Swedish participation in the UNESCO project "Pour Sauver Carthage" 1979-1983 presents three detailed studies of excavated material from the Swedish main Site A at Carth…age: terracotta lamps, animal bones and coins. The site is situated in central Carthage on the highest point of the saddle between the Carthaginian heights Byrsa and Juno. Excavations unearthed somewhat unexpectedly a building complex with a small Roman and Late Antique bath. Approximately 7000 finds were registered, and of them only the three categories presented in this volume have been analyzed in their entirety. They show that the latest building complex was used through to the 7th century AD. Circa 893 (mainly fragments of) terracotta lamps found at Site A are published and analytically studied in Chapter 1. A large amount of bones from mammals, birds and fish are studied and analysed in Chapter 2. The catalogue of the coinage in Chapter 3 contains description of coins from the Swedish excavations at Site A and B. Of 1281 discovered coins 508 coins are considered identifiable and discussed here with photographs. Epilogue of this volume presents a summary of the excavation and its results.

Placed as a stepping stone on the sea route between Europe and the New East, Cyprus has always been a meeting place of many cultures. Though rarely united politically through many millennia of history - and for extended periods subject to foreign rule - the island nonetheless managed to maintain specific and unique identities. T…his publication seeks to throw new light on important aspects of the economy of Cyprus between c. 700 BC and AD 700 through a concerted study of the transport amphorae found in and around the island. These standardised containers of fired clay were commonly used for shipping foodstuffs from their places of production to the consumers in antiquity. Completely preserved or found only in fragments, such vessels are a prime source of information about the island's exports and imports of agricultural products, and ultimately about the fluctuations in the economy of Cyprus through a crucial millennium and a half of her history. The jars thus contribute both to our undertanding of the changing intensities of Cypriot connections with other centres around the Mediterranean and to the documentation of regional patterning within the island itself., English, Year2013, Illust. B/W291, Illust. Color99, ISBN 9788771242133, Code 6808. Hardbound, In Pristine Condition, Bibl. Pages 244, Size 10öx 9ö.
