Half leather binding, with gilt titles, gilt decorated spine, marbled paper covered boards and end papers, and gilt page top edges, others tanned. Worn with damage and loss to the leather and marbled paper joins of Vol I, marks to the leat…her on all boards. Pagination: xlvii, [i], 768pp; xiv, 733pp. Provenance: bookplate with initials John W.G. Spicer, Spye Park to the front. Approximately 10 inches tall (25.5cm). Condition Report Externally Spine - very good condition - gilt titles, gilt decoration to the spine compartments, rubbed, marked and worn. Joints - very good condition - sound, rubbed and worn. Corners - very good condition - rubbed and worn. Boards - good condition - half morocco leather and marbled paper covered boards, worn with damage and minor loss to the join between the marbled paper and leather to Vol I, otherwise minor marks and scratches. Page edges - good condition - top edge gilt, others tanned and foxed. Binding - very good condition - attractive. See above and photos. Internally Hinges - very good condition - sound. Paste downs - very good condition - marbled paper, bookplate. End papers - very good condition - marbled, subsequently tanned and foxed. Title - good condition - tanned and foxed. Pages - good condition - tanned and foxed, many pages uncut to Vol II. See photos.

Plomer, Some Private Presses of the Nineteenth Century (The Library, pgs. 407-08, 1900). From a printing of 230 copies. Contains three engraved plates (one folding), including frontispiece in vol. I, three engraved maps…(two of which are folding). Sir Walter Scott's library at Abbotsford held a copy and he cites to it in his Essay on Chivalry, (Prose Works, vol. 6, pgs. 95-96). 4to. 2 volumes. [11], [1]-426pp.; [3], [v]-vii, [1]-328pp. Scarce in commerce. One Hundred Books Since 1471, pg. 17; Lowndes 1224; Allibone, pg. 969; Dibdin, Bibliomania, pg. 647. Paper with watermark of noted papermaker "J. Whatman 1801". Very good in contemporary diced calf, gilt ruled, rebacked with original backstrip laid down but ends chipped with loss, corners rubbed, the text generally clean but with foxed plates, and with prior owner signature to half titles.

Below will be listed the volumes with cover issues: Both cover boards detached: Volume I One cover board detached (f…ront cover): Volume IV Volume VII Volume X Volume XII Note that the cover boards are detached, but they are all present. The remaining volumes have both covers still attached. Overall condition of all Vol: The cover boards are worn and rubbed with all the corner edges being bumped and chipped. The top and bottom edges are worn and rubbed with volume III having a tear along the bottom edge. Text block is slightly warped, due to aging. Binding is tight. Pages throughout the volumes are slightly foxed, but not affecting any legibility. Otherwise pages are yellowed, but are clear and bright. In good condition for its age. As is.
