Little in the way of comprehensive academic literature on NZ limnology (the study of bodies of fresh water) was available before this work by Jolly and Brown was published. In his forward to the book M A Chapman, president of the NZ Limnological Society, said it was a milestone "since…it was the first time much previously unpublished or scattered and difuse material had been brought together." A handsome and vastly informative volume was the result. Following a general introduction, and maps locating NZ lakes, the content is sub-divided into sections covering Geomorphology, Physical Characteristics, Chemistry and General Biological Features, Plankton Studies, Plant Studies and Animal Studies, each with several sub-sections. Almost 40 years after publication this study is perticularly relevant as the water quality in NZ lakes comes under increasing pressure from unbanisation, agricultural and industrial impacts. First edition of 1975 jointly published by Auckland and Oxford UPs, 388 pages including references, glossary, NZ lakes index, scientific names index and general index. illustrated throughout with B/w photos, maps, drawings (mainly fish), diagrams, graphs, tables etc. Hard covers with light brown wrap-round misty lake photo image VG+ with two small impression marks lower front edge, small dealer stamp lower right corner FFEP, text block otherwise excellent, no inscriptions or markings.
