Zu Kriegszeiten war er eine der am heftigsten umkämpften Positionen der gesamten Westfront. Im Zeitraum September 1914 bis Februar 1915 wurde im Ostteil des Waldes auf einer Fläche von etwa 4 Quadratkilometern um eine einzelne Erdbefestigung der Franzosen gerungen. Deutsche wie französische Soldaten, die später in der Schlacht bei Verdun eingesetzt waren, schilderten nach dem Weltkrieg übereinstimmend, dass die Härte und die Strapazen der Kämpfe im Bois Brûlé ungleich schlimmer waren als alles vor Verdun Erlebte.
