Aggiungi al carrelloLeather. Condizione: Good. A very scarce edition of works by seventeenth century Nonconformist preachers and writers Richard Baxter and Joseph Alleine, reflecting on heaven and sin. A very scarce edition of The Saint's Everlasting Rest by Nonconformist preacher and writer Richard Baxter, bound with his Call to the Unconverted and fellow seventeenth century Nonconformist Joseph Alleine's An Alarm to Unconverted Sinners. Saint's Rest was first published in 1650, during the English Civil War.Only one copy of this edition is institutionally held in the UK, at the British Library. In full reverse calf, with an engraved frontispiece of Baxter.Described as 'The Chief of English Protestant Schoolmen', Baxter was a highly prolific Nonconformist preacher in Worcestershire, and was often in battles with the Church of England, even being imprisoned for his controversial Calvinist beliefs. The book compiles his most famous work, a reflection of hope and heaven, as well as his and Alleine's reflections on sin. In full reverse calf. Externally, the odd mark to boards and signs of edgewear. Rubbing to the spine, with spine label worn, and fading to boards. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities, where slight calf has been lost, heavier to top extremity of front board. Very minor cracks to to joints near head and tail of spine. Browning and the faint odd spot to end papers. Internally, firmly bound. Frontispiece is loosening. Pages are generally bright and clean, with age toning and the odd spot to the extremities of the occasional leaf. Creasing to the top extremity of the occasional leaf, heaviest to the final leaves.
