Stewart, est conçu comme un acte de mémoire et un hommage à ces peuples et à leur art, si fécond par son exubérance, son imagination et sa richesse de sens. Les photographies de Charles et Josette Lenars fournissent un témoignage frappant de la créativité culturelle des divers peuples de Nouvelle-Guinée, peuples profondément intégrés à leur environnement, qui ont tiré de ses couleurs vives, à travers leur art corporel, un moyen d'expression de leur identité perçue dans la terre et l'eau. Ainsi, l'amour de la décoration des Néo-Guinéens est évident dans leur participation enthousiaste à des célébrations locales, régionales et nationales contemporaines qu'elles soient de caractère local, politique ou à destination des touristes en visite, elles continuent à exprimer leur propre valeur. Leurs étonnantes décorations corporelles sont marquées par l'emploi stylisé d'éléments qu'on pourrait appeler " naturels ", la flore et la faune de leur univers : feuilles, écorces, mousses, pigments de la terre, insectes, peaux de serpent, fourrures d'animaux, plumes d'oiseaux, os, toute une variété de coquillages. La décoration n'est pas simplement une expression de leur participation esthétique à la " nature ", mais culturellement un moyen de communiquer des messages sur le monde, sur la société elle-même. Des messages sur les fantômes et les esprits, sur l'attrait des corps, sur le pouvoir et le statut social, sur le rôle des femmes et des hommes, sur le fait d'être membre d'un groupe, sur les alliances, les hostilités, et sur les mouvements des initiés d'une étape de (existence à une autre, y compris le mouvement de la vie vers la mort, considéré comme transmutation à l'état d'esprit.
