First and only edition. This interesting courtesy book is attributed to the presbyterian divine Joshua Oldfield (1656-1729) by the Bodleian online record. This seems to me a little unlikely: one of the essays (number XI) is said to be 'writ in France', and it is not immediately evident that Oldfield ever went there - and nor does it seem likely that a presbyterian minister would have been described as a gentleman. The book includes verse towards the end (pp. 109-130), one of them being a poem 'on the death of the beautiful Mrs K.A.'. Scarce: ESTC locates just five copies in Britain (three of them in Oxford), and three in the USA (Folger, McMaster and Newberry). Provenance.
