First and only edition. This interesting courtesy book is attributed to the presbyterian divine Joshua Oldfield (1656-1729) by the Bodleian online record. This seems to me a little unlikely: one of the essays (number XI) is said to be 'writ in France', and it is not immediately evident that Oldfield ever went there - and nor does it seem likely that a presbyterian minister would have been described as a gentleman. The book includes verse towards the end (pp. 109-130), one of them being a poem 'on the death of the beautiful Mrs K.A.'. Scarce: ESTC locates just five copies in Britain (three of them in Oxford), and three in the USA (Folger, McMaster and Newberry). Provenance. Inscriptions on title and pastedown, one possibly reading 'R. Winch', and dated '82'.
