Estienne printing of Jovius' 16th-century commentaries on the Roman Empire and the spread of Christianity. One of the rarest of Paulus Jovius' notable historical accounts. Surviving copies of Jovius (born Paolo Jovio in Como, Milan, on April 19, 1483) are often found in 18th century or later bindings. The ten woodcut portraits include, among other relevant historical figures, Archibishop Otho, Ioannes Galeacius, and Barnabas, and are of quite good detail for woodcuts. Jovius was an Italian historian, author of vivid historical works in Latin, and owner of a famous art collection. In about 1513 he settled in Rome. He won the favour of Leo X (who compared him to Livy) and of Cardinal Giulio de' Medici, later Clement VII, whom he helped during the sack of Rome in 1527. In 1528 Jovius became bishop of Nocera. He wrote a Latin history of Florence from 1494 to 1547, Historiarum sui temporis libri XLV (1550-52), and a series of lives of famous men. Though by modern standards-and even by comparison with some very scholarly works of his time his work lacks depth and political interest, its popularity ensued from his sparkling, elegant writing and richness of useful information. After Clement VII's death (1534), Jovius retired to a villa on Lake Como, where he invested the wealth he had acquired in antiquities, paintings, and curiosities. His collection was one of the first to include pieces from the New World. Please see all scans. L53n.

One of the early Italian editions of a historical work by Paolo Giovio (1483-1552), translated from Latin by Lodovico Domenichi (1515-1564), renowned for his editions and translations of classical authors. This work is composed of brief biographies of illustrious military leaders, both ancient and modern (i.e., from the Middle Ages to Renaissance). Primera edición de la traducción al italiano de esta famosa obra del historiador y médico Giovio (1483-1552), amigo de Julián de Medicis, que al llegar a Papa (Clemente VII) le nombró obispo de Nocera. Es un título muy difícil de encontrar completo, pues es habitual ofrecer sólo la "Prima parte dell'historie .", de 1551, sin contar con la segunda, publicada en 1553. Dividida en 45 libros, o partes, fue inicialmente escrita en latín con el título "Historiarum sui temporis", publicada igualmente en Florencia, por el mismo Torrentino, en 1550. (Graesse III, y Brunet III entran este autor por Jovius). La traducción italiana fue realizada por L. Domenico, de Piacenza, que acabó haciéndose muy amigo de Giovio, hasta el punto que al ser condenado Domenico por la Inquisición, acusado de hereje pudo intervenir en su favor y cambiar la severidad de la sentencia. La obra contiene mucha información sobre las guerras en Italia en el s. XVI y sobre muchos otros hechos, producto de la erudición de Giovio conseguida con el intercambio epistolar con grandes figuras de la política y la cultura de su tiempo. Contemporary full vellum binding, small damage to the top of the spine, neatly restored so there is only a small hole at the top. Small wormhole to the first leaves, not affecting text. A bit of foxing at the margins, but printed on good, bright paper; foxing to the second titlepage though. Old name and stamp scratched out on the titleleaf (but not on the second, where it can be clearly read). Some bumps to the upper edge, causing closed tears to some leaves - a few rather long, but only one page with a small loss of text. One page with a stain. Nice woodcut initials at the start of each chapter. Overall: Very good, tight good-looking copy. * Paolo Giovio the Younger [d. 1585] was bishop of Nocera de Pagani in Umbria.
