Some wear and discoloration to covers; marginal paper repairs to latter leaves and a few other places, mostly upper marg…ins with a few affected characters supplied in facsimile, marginal worming to latter leaves, front pastedown with adhesion damage and glue stain, very early inked name at ffep (scan), Zamorano Club bookplate at ffep, else very good. Estienne printing of Jovius' 16th-century commentaries on the Roman Empire and the spread of Christianity. One of the rarest of Paulus Jovius' notable historical accounts. Surviving copies of Jovius (born Paolo Jovio in Como, Milan, on April 19, 1483) are often found in 18th century or later bindings. The ten woodcut portraits include, among other relevant historical figures, Archibishop Otho, Ioannes Galeacius, and Barnabas, and are of quite good detail for woodcuts. Jovius was an Italian historian, author of vivid historical works in Latin, and owner of a famous art collection. In about 1513 he settled in Rome. He won the favour of Leo X (who compared him to Livy) and of Cardinal Giulio de' Medici, later Clement VII, whom he helped during the sack of Rome in 1527. In 1528 Jovius became bishop of Nocera. He wrote a Latin history of Florence from 1494 to 1547, Historiarum sui temporis libri XLV (1550-52), and a series of lives of famous men. Though by modern standards-and even by comparison with some very scholarly works of his time his work lacks depth and political interest, its popularity ensued from his sparkling, elegant writing and richness of useful information. After Clement VII's death (1534), Jovius retired to a villa on Lake Como, where he invested the wealth he had acquired in antiquities, paintings, and curiosities. One of the early Italian editions of a historical work by Paolo Giovio (1483-1552), translated from Latin by Lodovico Domenichi (1515-1564), renowned for his editions and translations of classical authors. This work is composed of brief biographies of illustrious military leaders, both ancient and modern (i.e., from the Middle A…ges to Renaissance). The title page is decorated with two woodcuts. /// Parchment binding; hardback, 292 leaves (584 pp.)., 12° (11 x 16 cm), cover worn, cracked and wavy, with title written with pen on backstrip, starting hinge, spine slightly cracked, endpapers worn, with chips and tears, title page slightly tanned, with colour smudge, most pages almost clean (or only slightly foxed), several pages with small stains, smudges or fingerprints, rare pen underlining, condition: good Book Language/s: Italian.

Large edition of the collected works… of the Italian humanist and historian Paolo Giovio (1483-1552) from Como. To his extensive contemporary history (Historiarum sui temporis libri XLV) are added several shorter texts about England, Scotland, Ireland, Russia (Moscovia), his native Lake Como and the famous treatise on fish "De Romanis piscibus" (first published in 1524, cf. Wood 359: "a very early treatise on Roman ichthyology"). There are also texts added by the English cartographer and historian George Lily (Virorum aliquot in Britannia. Elogia etc.). - Altough the first title says that the works are "imaginibus illustrata" the edition has no illustrations in the text apart from the portait of Giovio - this copy though has several added engravings. It is also annotated in many parts and has two manuscript pages with further historical details bound in. The endpapers give indices and some notes. Title with a small old owner s inscription. Some browning, little foxing but mostly clean, binding rubbed, rear board with some loss to the covering pigskin. Still a nice and decorative blindstamped binding with a figurative stamp to the center (Christ rising from the dead). ".

Jovius war schon zu Lebzeiten nicht unumstritten: "Man beschuldiget ihn, er sey sehr parteyisch gewest, und habe gelobt und gescholten, nachdem er Geld gekriegt." (Jöcher II, 1982f) Provenienz: aus der Bonner Bibliothek (1808 in der Franzosenzeit aufgelöst und in Hamburg versteigert) von Clemens August (1723-1761), Kurfürst und Erzbischof von Köln, mit dessen gestochenem Exlibris (von Barthold Heinrich Brockes) auf vorderem Spiegel, darüber auch eine hs. Signatur in Tinte. Der Stecher B. H. Brockes war der Sohn des Hamburger Dichters gleichen Namens (1680-1747); Thieme/Becker (5, 39) mit Erwähnung des Clemens-Exlibris (zuerst 1760). LA.

Primera edición de la traducción al italiano de esta famosa obra del historiador y médico Giovio (1483-1552), amigo de Julián de Medicis, que al llegar a Papa (Clemente VII) le nombró obispo de Nocera. Es un título muy difícil de encontrar completo, pues es habitual ofrecer sólo la "Prima parte dell'historie .", de 1551, sin contar con la segunda, publicada en 1553. Dividida en 45 libros, o partes, fue inicialmente escrita en latín con el título "Historiarum sui temporis", publicada igualmente en Florencia, por el mismo Torrentino, en 1550. (Graesse III, y Brunet III entran este autor por Jovius). La traducción italiana fue realizada por L. Domenico, de Piacenza, que acabó haciéndose muy amigo de Giovio, hasta el punto que al ser condenado Domenico por la Inquisición, acusado de hereje pudo intervenir en su favor y cambiar la severidad de la sentencia. La obra contiene mucha información sobre las guerras en Italia en el s. XVI y sobre muchos otros hechos, producto de la erudición de Giovio conseguida con el intercambio epistolar con grandes figuras de la política y la cultura de su tiempo. Contemporary full vellum binding, small damage to the top of the spine, neatly restored so there is only a small hole at the top. Small wormhole to the first leaves, not affecting text. A bit of foxing at the margins, but printed on good, br…ight paper; foxing to the second titlepage though. Old name and stamp scratched out on the titleleaf (but not on the second, where it can be clearly read). Some bumps to the upper edge, causing closed tears to some leaves - a few rather long, but only one page with a small loss of text. One page with a stain. Nice woodcut initials at the start of each chapter. Overall: Very good, tight good-looking copy. * Paolo Giovio the Younger [d. 1585] was bishop of Nocera de Pagani in Umbria.
