Very good condition, only cover with small signs of wear. - Content : Indledning -- English Introduction -- Katalog -- Biografisk oversigt -- Udvalgt litteratur -- Efterord - Navneregister. / "Jens Juel* must have been born with a paint brush in his hand, or at least with a pencil, and already as a boy he had wielded it so diligently and with so much zeal and such evident talent that it attracted attention and was felt to deserve tuition. We do not know any of his very early drawings; only from the period of his apprenticeship to the painter Michael Gehrmann in Hamburg, about 1760-65, do we have copies of portraits, self-portraits, and small rococo-like compositions in Indian ink and chalk (cat. nos. 1-7), unmistakably done by a young painter who could use his eyes and had an aptitude for and interest in his future field, that of portraiture. After a sound vocational training in Hamburg, he came, about 1765, now a journeyman painter, to the recently founded Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, went through the drawing classes, and was certainly in Professor Johan Mandel- berg's studio, probably also in that of Professor Peder Als, and became acquainted with the portrait painting of C. G. Pilo and Louis Tocqué. He definitely wanted to be a portraitist, and we get an impression of his cheerful self-confidence from the large, beautifully drawn study for a self-portrait, actually done in Tocqué's style (cat. no. 13). Young and promising as he was, he soon had his hands full with orders for portraits of the Copenhagen bourgeoisie and aristocracy, his clients constantly increasing in number and importance. At the same time, but without much artistic inspira- tion, he had to toil at historical paintings for the Gold Medal competitions in order to get the much-coveted Rome travelling scholarship. He was awarded the small Gold Medal in 1767 and the large one in 1771, but the travelling money went to N. A. Abildgaard, whose turn it was.
