Of particular interest are the striking illustrations by Steinlen and Balluriau, which epitomise the distinctive visual language of the Belle Époque and the emerging Art Nouveau movement. In good (plus) condition overall. Illustrations are vibrant and text clear. Some pages exhibit small flaw such as a tear or worn edges, or minor marks. "Vingt Mille Lieues Sous Les Mers" (English: Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea) is a classic science fiction novel by French writer Jules Verne published in 1870. It tells the story of Captain Nemo and his submarine Nautilus as seen from the perspective of Professor Pierre Aronnax. The original edition had no illustrations; this copy is identical to the first illustrated edition which was published in 1871. 111 illustrations by Riou (24) and Alphonse de Neuville (86), engraved by Hildibrand. Includes 6 chromotypographs and 2 full-page b/w maps. Some age wear on binding with upper spine somewhat rippled and moderate rubbing along edges. Book poorly recased with glue remain along gutters. Tissue guard and title page slightly foxed. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Slight age toning along paper margin. Text in French. Binding in overall good, interior in good to good+ condition.…

Complete with 217 numbered pages of text, followed by 11 unnumbered pages comprising the Table des Chapitres and the publisher's catalog. Text printed by Gauthier-Villars, bearing the signature printer's code "28" at the foot of page 217. Features the author and title centered within a prominent gilt circle, flanked by smaller top and bottom circles displaying the monograms "JV" and "JH" across open book pages. Spine features elegant gilt lettering and ornamentation; blind-stamped geometric borders to the rear board. All edges gilt. Contains the rare, early Hetzel Catalogue for the 1874?1875 season bound in at the rear. The "En Préparation" (In Preparation) section notably lists the third and final installment of L'Île mystérieuse (3e partie: Le secret de l'île), dating the manufacture of this volume to late 1874 or the very beginning of 1875?printed months before The Mysterious Island was fully published. This should therefore be a rare crossover instance of a first-year text block housed in the earliest iteration of the beloved JV-JH circle binding.
