Ce fait n'est pas nouveaü; on peut le constater chez la plupart des écrivains, depuis l'antiquité jusqu'à nos jours. Mais c'est particulièrement au règne animal, que se rapportent les erreurs les plus fréquentes et les plus singulières. Avec le temps, elles se sont tellement multipliées qu'il en est résulté une sorte de faune littéraire, très bizarre, dans laquelle les animaux sont déguisés en bêtes de tous genres, et affublés de noms plus ou moins corrompus, voire même incompréhensibles. Tantôt un seul mot sert à désigner des animaux de natures tout à fait différentes, tantôt un même animal porté les noms de plusieurs autres, qui ne lui ressemblent aucunement.'Jules Camus a écrit cet essai en début de siècle, à la recherche de la véritable Lonza de Dante.
