Julien Freund, one of the leading authorities on Weber, has now written a book which has already been acclaimed by Professor Norman Birnbaum as" . the most comprehensive, penetrating and lucid of all the works on Max Weber's general sociology." Freund has allowed his subject to direct the nature of this rich and always interesting study. Weber believed that attempts to unify and systematize knowledge inevitably lead to narrow formalism; he preferred to work more directly with the raw materials of his studies, seeking to impose no pattern on them other than that methodologically necessary to accent their uniqueness. Thus, the author makes extensive use of quotation not only to show the quality of Weber's work as a sociologist, but also to show the incredible range of the man's interests and erudition. The first three chapters contain a detailed analysis of the conceptual tools Weber habitually made use of. Among these are "value~orientation," "ethical neutrality," and "rationalization." Later in the book, in a long final chapter, Freund discusses Weber's sociological analyses of economics, religion, politics, the law and the arts. It was Weber's signal achievement to found the science we know as sociology. This book is worthy of the man and his work.
