Das ermutigte den Verlag und die Redaktion, an die herstellung des vorliegenden ersten Monatsheftes zu gehen. Der Entwurf eines Programmes ist eigentlich überflüssig; sagt ja schon der Titel alles, was das »neue Fachblatt« will: Allen Pilzfreunden mit Rat und Tat an die Hand gehen, um das Erkennen und Bestimmen der eßbaren und giftigen Pilze zu erleichtern, eine rege Aussprache unter den Pilzfreunden zu ermöglichen, gemachte Erfahrungen zum Nutzen der Gesamtheit zu veröffentlichen, vergleichende Marktberichte mit Preisnotierungen der verschiedenen Pilzsorten mitzuteilen, Absatzgebiete für den Pilzhandel zu schaffen, unseren lieben Hausfrauen die beste Zubereitungsart zu vermitteln und noch viele hundert andere Dinge zu erledigen, welche nur unter Pilzfreunden die rechte Würdigung finden können ? kurz und gut: das Organ aller Pilzfreunde zu sein. Aber auch der Wissenschaft soll das ihr gebührende Plätzchen eingeräumt werden. Noch hat sie viel, sehr viel zu tun und es werden vielleicht noch Jahrhunderte vergehen, bis der Augiasstall von törichten Vorurteilen und kindlichem Aberglauben in unserem Volke vollständig gereinigt ist. Es ist demnach zu hoffen, daß die verehrlichen Pilzfreunde, von regem Eifer für die Pilzkunde und ihre gemeinnützige Anwendung belebt, sich nicht begnügen werden, bloß dieses Blatt zu abonnieren, sondern daß sie dasselbe auch mit ihren Beiträgen bereichern, so viel Verhältnisse und Zeit es einem jeden erlauben. Dies braucht nicht gerade durch große, ausführliche Abhandlungen zu geschehen, sondern es können auch einzelne Bemerkungen, Beobachtungen und Erfahrungen in wenigen Zeilen mitgeteilt ein hohes Interesse haben und die Aufmerksamkeit auf einen Gegenstand lenken, der vielleicht noch gar nicht oder nicht hinlänglich beachtet und gewürdigt worden ist. Werden nun beide Momente, das wissenschaftliche und das volkstümliche, mit glücklicher Hand gemischt, so wird der »Pilzfreund« kein ausschließlich wissenschaftliches, sondern ein volkstümliches Organ der Pilzjäger und -jägerinnen werden, das in populärwissenschaftlichen Abhandlungen die Kenntnis der Pilze im Volke verbreiten, die Furcht vor giftigen Pilzen zerstreuen und Pilzvergiftungen verhindern soll und kann.
