Paperback. Condizione: New. These two essays, written late in Jung's life, reflect his responses to the shattering experience of WWII and the dawn of mass society. Among his most influential works, 'The Undiscovered Self' is a plea for Jung's generation - and those to come - to continue the individual work of self-discovery and not abandon needed psychological reflectrion for the easy ephemera of mass culture. Only individual awareness of both the conscious and unconscious aspects of the human psyche, Jung informs us, will allow the great work of human culture to continue and thrive. This volume's second essay, 'Symbols and the Interpretation of Dreams,' was completed shortly before Jung's death in 1961. Describing dreams as communications from the unconscious, Jung explains how the symbols that occur in dreams compensate for repressed emotions and intuitions. This essy brings together Jung's fully evolved thoughts on the analysis of dreams, and the healing of the reift between consciousness and the unconscious, ideas that are central to his system of psychology. 144p.

Mass Market Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. 6th Printing. 132 pp. Solidly bound copy with moderate external wear, crisp pages and clean text. Light stain on front cover. Synopsis: A comprehensive, but clear, introduction to Zen Buddhism. T. Suzuki (1870 - 1966) is usually credited with introducing Zen Buddhism to America, and in 'An Introduction to Zen Buddhism' he covers Zen in a scholastic and erudite fashion. Suzuki's use of English is extremely complex, but his style gets information across very well. While expounding on the basics of Zen, Suzuki is always quick to respond to questions the reader might have. He dedicates an entire chapter to countering the oft-heard argument that Zen is nihilistic. The final chapter covers daily life for Zen monks, giving Westerners a glimpse of what is common knowledge for Japanese (or was several generations ago) . The book is not perfect, however. Suzuki covers only the Rinzai school of Japanese Buddhism, leaving the Soto school out in the cold. Also, like any Japanese Zen scholar, he tends to do a little Theravada bashing, claiming that it is "primitive" and unrefined. T. Suzuki was a professor of Buddhist studies, and not a Zen adept himself, so it is important to also read an account of Zen from a personal and practical angle, to complement Suzuki's scholarly approach. For that, I recommend questions to a Zen Master with Taisen Deshimaru.

Very clean yellow cloth covered text has small coffee colour splash on side edge, grey dust jacket has light edgewear, light dimple, otherwise very clean and well bound. 5 X 8" 740 pages, published 1974, Third Edition 11th printing. The I Ching, or Book of Changes, is one of the first efforts of the human mind to place itself within the universe. It has exerted a living influence in China for 3,000 years, and interest in it has spread in the West. First set down in the dawn of history as a book of oracles, the Book of Changes deepened in meaning when ethical values were attached to the oracular pronouncements; it became a book of wisdom, eventually one of the Five Classics of Confucianism. Soft cover. Condizione: As New. Paperback reissue, with a new foreword by John Beebe, 2013, 1st printing. 447pp. "In this compact volume, British psychiatrist and writer Anthony Storr has selected extracts from Jung's writings that pinpoint his many original contributions and relate the development of his thought to his biography. Storr's explanatory notes and introduction show the progress and coherence of Jung's ideas. Jung maintained that we are profoundly ignorant of ourselves and that our most pressing task is to deflect our gaze away from the external world and toward the study of our own nature. In a world torn by conflict and threatened by annihilation, his message has an urgent relevance for every thoughtful person." [publisher copy] "Storr has undertaken the formidable task of selecting essential extracts from the huge outpouring of Jung, whose collected works fill 18 volumes. He starts well with a lively and succinct introduction . . . The book is then neatly compartmentalized into the main stages of Jung's thought, with elucidatory prefaces by Dr Storr to each stage."--Economist. "This is by far the best introduction to the work and thought of Carl Gustav Jung now available [1983]. I wish it were possible to require that every teacher and critic, cleric and cocktail-party magus who takes the name of Jung upon his tongue should have read Anthony Storr's admirable compilation at least once, for untold misunderstanding and unwarranted assumption would be saved thereby . . . Once again, thanks and praise to Anthony Storr, clinical lecturer in psychiatry in the University of Oxford, for a masterly achievement."--Robertson Davies, The Globe and Mail.
