Junker explored Africa from 1875 to 1886 including mapping of the Congo River and exploring the Nile sources. He also established the identity of the Welle and Ubangi. Junker received the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1887. He published 3 books of his exploration, of which this is the final one. Originally published in German. The many excellent illustrations include the people, nature, plants, native artifacts. A picture of this book is available on request.

Born of German parents in Moscow, he was influenced in his desire to explore Africa by Schweinfurth who drew his attention to the lands south of the Libyan desert, 'a region at that time. still shrouded in the veil of an awe-inspiring mystery'. His fascination with the region led him to make three expeditions over a period of eleven years and he is recognised as one of the great African explorers.
