The slip is hand-stamped and dated 16 DEC 1898, reading: "Mr. T. Fisher Unwin has pleasure in sending the Editor the accompanying book, which he has just published." The original publication price is neatly penned on the slip as 5/- (five shillings), with an explicit request from the publisher for a copy of the editor's upcoming press review. Provenance/Association: The top of the title page bears the historic purple ink ownership stamp of Joseph Brennan (1887-1976), the highly influential Irish civil servant, financial architect, and first Governor/Chairman of the Central Bank of Ireland. This distinct association marks the volume as a notable piece of Irish and British political-economic history, tracing its provenance directly back to the personal library of one of early 20th-century Ireland's premier financial figures. The spine has raised bands to six compartments with the title and author to a green panel in the second and gilt decoration and binding to the rest There are marbled endpapers and blind dentelles to the inside and matching marbled page edges all round. the text block is tight, white, bright and square. Justin McCarthy (22 November 1830 24 April 1912) was an Irish nationalist and Liberal historian, novelist and politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1879 to 1900, taking his seat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. McCarthy's real bent was towards literature. His earliest publications were novels, some of which, such as A Fair Saxon (1873), Dear Lady Disdain (1875), Miss Misanthrope (1878), Donna Quixote (1879), attained considerable popularity. His most important work is his History of Our Own Times (vols. i.iv., 18791880; vol. v., 1897),which treats of the period between Queen Victoria's accession and her Diamond Jubilee. Easily and delightfully written, and on the whole eminently sane and moderate, these volumes form a brilliant piece of narrative from a Liberal standpoint.
