XII, 640, (4 publications) PP with 198 b/w illustrations in text, plus 14 plates with maps in colour (4 on single page, 10 on double pages for 21 maps and 13 insets), 9 plates in colour with tissue guard, and 15 b/w plates with 22 woodcuts. Illustrated endpapers. Quarter bound, cloth boards, title on front board, gilt title and decoration on leather spine. Outside edges marbled. Covers soiled, hinges of spine rubbed, some rust marks in the gutters and a few loose pages where staples have rusted in the first few pages and the last few pages of the gathering. Nota: from the 1880s, wire staples were used as a substitute to stitching: a habit which luckily did not last long. Very good. Complete. Gothic German text. 25.7 x 18.5.
