Softcover. Condizione: Good. First Edition. EJ. Dijksterhuis (1892-1965) is de bekendste wetenschapshistoricus die Nederland gekend heeft. Voor zijn hoofdwerk De mechanisering van het wereldbeeld ontving hij in 1952 de P.C. Hooftprijs. Dat deze hoogste literaire onderscheiding werd uitgereikt voor een boek over de geschiedenis. van de natuurwetenschappen, stemde Dijksterhuis tot grote tevredenheid. Zijn wetenschapshistorische werk heeft hij immers altijd gezien als een bijdrage tot het overbruggen van de kloof tussen de literaire en de natuurwetenschappelijke wereld. De wetenschapsgeschiedenis, die door historici en beoefenaren van de natuurwetenschap altijd stiefmoederlijk behandeld was, was daartoe volgens Dijksterhuis het middel bij uitstek; hier konden de vertegenwoordigers van de literaire cultuur zien hoe de natuurwetenschap zich als een element van de cultuur als geheel had ontwikkeld; de natuurwetenschappers konden zien hoe ook hun specialismen niet in een vacuüm waren ontstaan. In Clio's stiefkind zijn tien essays van Dijksterhuis bijeengebracht. De bundel is samengesteld door K. van Berkel, die een inleiding op de stukken schreef en elk essay van een korte toelichting voorzag. De artikelen (geschreven tussen 1920 en 1955) zijn 20 gekozen dat ze samen een goed beeld geven van het werk en de idealen van Dijksterhuis. Simon Stevin of Galileï, het doel van de wetenschapsgeschiedenis of de grenzen van de Griekse wiskunde - dit alles wordt op een uiterst leesbare en verrassend moderne manier behandeld. In Clio's stiefkind wordt duidelijk dat Dijksterhuis' thematiek in elk geval nog niet aan actualiteit heeft ingeboet.…
