This is an exceptionally scarce of British home front social history. Bypassing commercial publishing channels and missing from standard legal deposit databases, this work is unrecorded on Copac (Jisc Library Hub Discover). Produced under the strict censorship parameters of the Defence of the Realm Act (DORA), it employs the standardized government placeholder "Somewhere in England" on the title page to protect the facility's location from enemy air raids. Only a small trade imprint at the back anchors its production to Croydon, where it was sold internally by the workforce to raise funds for St. Dunstan's hostel for blinded servicemen. Rather than standard shell-filling, the content reveals this collection originated from the aircraft assembly and salvage operations supporting the Royal Flying Corps in the Croydon/Beddington area (such as the Aircraft Disposal Company or the Aeronautical Inspection Directorate). This is assumed as in one of the drawings a woman is seen carrying a small dispatch box clearly labelled A. D. and in another drawing a sketch of a Miss Compton shows here wearing an A.I.D. badge, which stands for the Aeronautical Inspection Directorate (originally formed as the Aeronautical Inspection Department under the War Office in December 1913) The verses and sketches, primarily executed by the talented factory artist K. Gastrell, with contributions by M. Tibson, capture an intimate, humorous look at the daily routines and hardships of the "munitionettes" (female factory workers). The book is structured sequentially around a regular 24-hour cycle of industrial labour. This specific copy includes a loose contemporary group portrait photograph inserted by the original owner. The sepia-toned studio card depicts five female factory workers posing in their official protective uniform overalls, hair-containment caps, and triangular "On War Service" badges. Inscribed on the reverse of the photograph in pencil in early 20th-century cursive is the name "Ada Beatrice". The book is a paperback format with yapped edges, 7.5 inches tall approx., running to 48 pages.
